Nepal has officially launched a new initiative to promote wellness tourism and institutionalize a nationwide “Healthy Food Campaign” across star-rated hotels, marking a significant step toward positioning the country as a leading global wellness destination. The campaign was initiated with the objective of integrating wellness-focused hospitality services into Nepal’s tourism industry as part of the country’s long-term tourism development strategy.
The initiative comes following the approval of Nepal’s National Tourism Strategy 2026–2035 and Action Plan 2026–2030, while the Government of Nepal has also officially declared 2027 as “Wellness Year”, signaling strong policy commitment toward expanding Nepal’s wellness tourism sector.
Hotel Association Nepal Takes Lead in Wellness Promotion with “Healthy Food Campaign”
The program was organized by Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) in collaboration with Nepal In Business, bringing together hospitality leaders, tourism experts, chefs, and policymakers to promote wellness tourism and establish healthier food practices within Nepal’s premium hotel industry.

Speaking at the event, HAN President Binayak Shah highlighted Nepal’s immense untapped potential in wellness tourism, emphasizing that star hotels must play a leadership role in driving the campaign forward. He noted that hotels need to begin incorporating wellness-focused cuisine and healthy menu options to address the evolving needs of travelers increasingly seeking health-conscious travel experiences.
Healthy Food Integration Becomes Key Focus for Hotels
According to Shah, the orientation program was specifically designed to provide chefs working in star hotels with practical knowledge about the importance of wellness food, preparation methods, nutritional value, and strategies for integrating healthy dishes into regular hotel menus.
HAN believes the initiative will serve as an important catalyst in strengthening Nepal’s growing wellness tourism campaign and encouraging hotels to rethink hospitality services beyond traditional accommodation offerings. The campaign focuses on promoting food systems based on balanced diet, healthy lifestyle practices, seasonal nutrition, Nepali food culture, and scientific nutritional analysis, combining principles of Ayurveda with modern health science.
Government Prioritizes Wellness Tourism Development
During the program, Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management Executive Director Divya Raj Pokharel stressed the need for skilled human resources, research, and innovation to successfully develop Nepal’s wellness tourism sector. He emphasized that Nepal’s hotel industry must take a leading role in building globally competitive wellness tourism experiences.
Similarly, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Joint Secretary Indu Ghimire said the Government of Nepal has identified wellness tourism as a priority area for national tourism development. She added that stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors will be essential to successfully implement the country’s wellness tourism vision.

Experts Highlight Nepal’s Potential in Global Wellness Tourism Market
At the event, life science expert LP Bhanu Sharma discussed the direct relationship between health, lifestyle, and nutrition, explaining that wellness food can significantly contribute to improving physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. He also highlighted Nepal’s unique opportunity to combine its indigenous food culture, Ayurvedic knowledge, and traditional healing systems with modern tourism experiences to create internationally competitive wellness tourism products. To make the program more practical and experience-driven, organizers also held a special culinary exhibition, where participating chefs and trainers showcased various wellness food preparations developed under the campaign.
Nepal Eyes Global Recognition as a Wellness Tourism Destination
As part of its long-term commitment, HAN announced plans to continue organizing additional training programs, research initiatives, partnerships, and awareness campaigns aimed at strengthening wellness tourism promotion in Nepal. The association has also formed a special expert task force to further guide policy implementation and develop internationally competitive wellness tourism products.
Industry stakeholders believe that strengthening wellness tourism will not only attract more health-conscious international travelers but also increase tourist spending, longer stays, and higher-value tourism experiences, ultimately contributing positively to Nepal’s broader tourism economy. With the government’s Wellness Year 2027 campaign approaching, Nepal is positioning itself to become one of Asia’s emerging destinations for wellness travel, Ayurvedic tourism, healthy cuisine, and holistic hospitality experiences.
