Bhutan Hosts Inaugural International Travel Mart 2026, Strengthening Nepal-Bhutan Tourism Partnership

The first-ever Bhutan International Travel Mart (BITM) 2026 has officially commenced in Thimphu, bringing together tourism entrepreneurs, policymakers, and stakeholders from Nepal and approximately 15 countries across the globe. The landmark three-day event is expected to significantly strengthen tourism cooperation between Nepal and Bhutan while positioning the Himalayan kingdom as a premier high-value international tourism destination on the world stage.

A Historic First: Bhutan Opens Its Doors to the World of Travel Trade

The BITM 2026 has been jointly organised by the Department of Tourism under Bhutan’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, and the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators (ABTO). The inaugural ceremony was formally opened by Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment, marking a milestone moment in Bhutan’s strategic engagement with the global tourism industry.

The event represents Bhutan’s most ambitious and structured effort to date to bring the international travel trade community directly to its doorstep, offering buyers, sellers, and partners a dedicated platform to forge meaningful business relationships and explore collaborative opportunities in one of Asia’s most unique and sought-after tourism destinations.

Minister’s Vision: Beyond Tourism, Towards Shared Prosperity

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Minister Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji emphasised that the BITM is far more than a conventional tourism trade event. He described it as an important milestone in Bhutan’s broader journey of economic and social development, underlining the government’s conviction that tourism, when managed responsibly and sustainably, can serve as a powerful engine of national prosperity and community wellbeing.

The Minister expressed a firm commitment to advancing regional cooperation and shared prosperity through tourism, signalling Bhutan’s intent to deepen its partnerships with neighbouring countries, including Nepal, as well as with international markets. His address set a tone of purposeful ambition for the event, one that looks beyond immediate commercial transactions toward long-term, sustainable, and mutually beneficial tourism development across the region.

Building Tourism Ambassadors, Not Just Business Deals

One of the most resonant messages of the inaugural session came from Mr. Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, Government of Bhutan, who articulated a vision for BITM that goes beyond conventional trade mart objectives. Director Rinzin stated that the event is conceived not merely as a platform for business transactions, but as an opportunity to create genuine international ambassadors for Bhutan’s tourism.

“We are not here just for commercial agreements. We want to build good ambassadors for tourism. The future of sustainable tourism is only possible through shared cooperation, trust, and collective effort,” Director Rinzin said, capturing the spirit and philosophy that underpins the entire BITM initiative. He further stressed that regional and international partnerships are indispensable for the sustainable development of tourism and called for expanded cooperation with neighbouring countries, with particular emphasis on Nepal as a key tourism partner.

Over 200 International Buyers from 15 Countries

The scale and international reach of BITM 2026 reflect the growing global interest in Bhutan as a tourism destination. The event has attracted more than 200 international buyers from approximately 15 countries, including Nepal, India, Thailand, Singapore, China, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Japan, Germany, Canada, and Spain, among others. This diverse representation of buying power from across Asia, Europe, and beyond underscores the broad international appeal of Bhutan’s unique tourism offering.

On the supply side, more than 50 tourism exhibitors are participating in the mart, including hotels, tour operators, airline companies, and helicopter service providers, giving international buyers a comprehensive overview of Bhutan’s full tourism ecosystem and the diverse range of experiences the kingdom has to offer.

Nepal as Bhutan’s Key Tourism Partner

Nepal’s participation in BITM 2026 has been notably significant, with a strong contingent of Nepali tourism entrepreneurs and representatives attending the event. Bhutan has formally presented Nepal as one of its most important and valued tourism partners, recognising the deep cultural, geographical, and spiritual connections that bind the two Himalayan nations.

Nepali tourism professionals at the event highlighted the growing scope for experience sharing and joint promotion between Nepal and Bhutan across several key tourism segments, including Himalayan tourism, spiritual and pilgrimage travel, adventure tourism, and sustainable tourism management. Both countries share a remarkable wealth of natural landscapes, Buddhist heritage, and adventure tourism assets that make them natural partners in developing complementary tourism products and cross-border travel circuits that could benefit both nations and their respective tourism industries.

Bhutan’s Ambitious Tourism Projects in the Spotlight

BITM 2026 has provided Bhutan with a powerful platform to showcase some of its most ambitious and innovative tourism development projects to the international community. Among the highlights presented at the mart is the visionary Gelephu Mindfulness City, an ambitious new planned city designed around principles of mindfulness, sustainability, and holistic living that has captured significant international attention and curiosity. The Wangdicholing Palace Museum, the regenerative village of Denchenggang, and the internationally acclaimed Snowman Race, one of the world’s most challenging and remote ultra-marathon events, have also been featured prominently at the mart.

In addition, Bhutan has used the BITM platform to promote the tourism potential of 11 of its less-visited dzongkhags (districts), bringing previously overlooked destinations and experiences to the attention of international buyers and travel planners. This deliberate effort to spread tourism benefits more widely across the country reflects Bhutan’s commitment to inclusive and geographically balanced tourism development.

High Value, Low Volume: Bhutan’s Signature Tourism Philosophy

A central theme running through BITM 2026 is the country’s long-standing and internationally recognised tourism philosophy of “high value, low volume,” a policy that prioritises quality of visitor experience and environmental sustainability over mass tourism numbers. This approach, which has defined it’s tourism identity for decades, is being promoted with renewed vigour and strategic focus through the BITM platform as Bhutan seeks to further strengthen its position in the premium international tourism market.

The event is seen as a direct expression of this philosophy, by engaging selectively with high-quality international buyers and partners rather than pursuing volume-driven mass tourism promotion, Bhutan is reinforcing its brand as one of the world’s most exclusive, authentic, and environmentally responsible travel destinations.

A Platform Set to Become an Annual Tradition

The organisers of BITM 2026 have confirmed that the Bhutan International Travel Mart is intended to become a regular annual event, establishing itself as a fixture in the international tourism trade calendar. This long-term vision reflects Bhutan’s commitment to sustained engagement with the global tourism industry and its ambition to build the BITM into a recognised and respected platform that consistently delivers value for both Bhutanese tourism stakeholders and their international partners.

The annual BITM is expected to progressively raise Bhutan’s profile as a top-tier international tourism destination while generating direct economic benefits for local communities and businesses across the country, aligning commercial tourism growth with the kingdom’s broader national development goals.
