Nestled atop a scenic mountain ridge surrounded by dense forests, peaceful solitude, and panoramic Himalayan landscapes, Bhankase in Beni Municipality is emerging as one of western Nepal’s lesser-known destinations with strong potential for both religious and tourism development. Despite its extraordinary natural beauty, spiritual significance, and historical importance, the site continues to remain largely unexplored, awaiting stronger infrastructure development, wider promotion, and greater tourist attention.
Located in Ward No. 10 of Patlekhet, Bhankase offers visitors a rare combination of tranquility, pristine nature, and cultural heritage, making it an ideal destination for spiritual seekers, trekkers, and travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences in Nepal.

Ancient Site Believed to Be a Place of Meditation for Sages
According to local belief, Bhankase has deep historical and religious significance dating back to ancient times when sages and spiritual practitioners are believed to have performed meditation and penance in the area to attain knowledge and spiritual enlightenment. Resident Lok Bahadur Pun explained that the destination, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,600 meters above sea level, requires greater promotion to unlock its tourism potential.
He shared a popular local belief regarding the origin of the site’s name. According to community tradition, the place once experienced a geological collapse that created a deep hole or cave-like depression in the mountain. Over time, locals began referring to it as “Bhwang Khasyo,” meaning the mountain collapsed inward, which gradually evolved linguistically into the present-day name Bhankase.

Unique Geological Formation and Stunning Himalayan Panorama
One of Bhankase’s most striking features is its unusual geography. The hilltop contains a naturally formed cave-like sinkhole created after part of the mountain collapsed, forming what locals describe as a large underground opening or “Bhwang.” Near this geological formation lies approximately 10 ropanis of flat open land, creating an unusual plateau-like landscape rarely found at such elevation. The site’s dramatic topography combined with dense surrounding forest creates a remarkably peaceful and visually captivating environment.
Visitors standing at Bhankase are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of some of Nepal’s most iconic Himalayan peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri Himal, Annapurna Range, and Machhapuchhre. Residents also say that from Bhankase, visitors can observe the geographical landscape of 35 out of Myagdi district’s former 41 Village Development Committees (VDCs), making it one of the region’s best natural viewpoints.

Nearby Siddhathan Adds Strong Religious Importance
Approximately 200 meters below Bhankase lies another spiritually important site known as Siddhathan, further strengthening the area’s religious significance. Local accounts suggest that sages who once meditated in the region eventually gave up their physical bodies at Siddhathan, where a temple and religious rest house have since been constructed in their memory.

Even today, the site continues to attract spiritual practitioners from different parts of Nepal. One notable ascetic, Rupchandra, who arrived from Sindhupalchok District, has reportedly been meditating in Bhankase for the past 12 years. According to Rupchandra, he chose the location after seeing a spiritual vision in a dream and has dedicated his meditation practice toward promoting world peace and a society free from social distortions and negativity.

Growing Potential for Wellness and Spiritual Tourism
Both Bhankase and Siddhathan now host several small ashrams, making the destination increasingly attractive for wellness tourism, spiritual retreats, meditation programs, and pilgrimage travel. The route to Siddhathan requires approximately 30 minutes of walking from Wakhet village, while Bhankase can be reached after an additional 15-minute uphill hike.
Travelers can also access the destination from Todke, another growing tourism destination located at the border of Raghuganga Rural Municipality, Mangala Rural Municipality, and Beni Municipality, followed by roughly a 40-minute walking trail. The peaceful environment, untouched nature, bird sounds, forest surroundings, and remote mountain setting create ideal conditions for meditation-focused tourism experiences increasingly sought by travelers seeking healing and reconnection with nature.

Local Government Moves to Develop Destination Under Tourism Project
Recognizing the destination’s long-term tourism potential, Beni Municipality has included Siddhathan and Bhankase under its “One Ward, One Tourism Project” development initiative. Ward Chairperson Masbir Roka said the municipality plans to develop the area as a destination focused on wellness tourism, religious tourism, and nature-based travel experiences.
As part of the project, authorities have already begun constructing trekking trails connecting Wakhet, Siddhathan, and Bhankase, while road access to Siddhathan has also been developed to improve visitor accessibility. Local authorities have additionally initiated historical and religious research in collaboration with spiritual leaders and religious scholars to gather documented evidence about the site’s ancient significance.

A Promising Destination Waiting to Be Discovered
Although Bhankase remains relatively unknown compared to Nepal’s mainstream tourism destinations, its combination of breathtaking mountain scenery, rich mythology, religious history, meditation culture, and peaceful natural environment positions it as one of Myagdi’s hidden tourism gems.
With proper infrastructure, destination branding, and stronger tourism promotion, Bhankase has the potential to emerge as a major destination for spiritual travelers, wellness tourists, and visitors seeking authentic nature-based experiences beyond Nepal’s traditional tourism routes. For now, this quiet hilltop sanctuary in Myagdi continues to wait patiently for the recognition it deserves.
