Nepali mountain guide Chatur Tamang has achieved a historic milestone in global mountaineering by successfully summiting Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, for the 200th time. Tamang reached the summit of the 5,642-metre Mount Elbrus at 6:20 a.m. Russian time on July 25, completing his landmark 200th ascent of the iconic mountain. During the historic climb, he once again carried the Nepali national flag to the summit, showcasing Nepal’s rich mountaineering heritage and the significant contribution of Nepali climbers to international mountaineering.
Achieves 200th Summit After 199th Ascent
Chatur Tamang completed his 199th ascent of Mount Elbrus on July 23. After returning from the mountain, he resumed his climb and successfully reached the summit again on July 25 to accomplish his ambitious goal of completing 200 ascents. His achievement marks a remarkable chapter in the history of mountaineering and highlights the extraordinary endurance, experience, and dedication required to repeatedly climb one of the world’s most prominent peaks.
Three Decades in Professional Mountaineering
A native of Solukhumbu, one of Nepal’s most renowned mountain districts, Chatur Tamang has been active in the professional mountaineering sector since 1995.
His long career has taken him across some of the world’s most challenging and renowned mountains. Since 2002, he has been based in Russia, where he has worked as a mountain guide and led international clients on expeditions to Mount Elbrus.
It was during his years of guiding on the mountain that Chatur Tamang set himself the ambitious target of climbing Mount Elbrus 200 times. More than two decades later, he has successfully fulfilled that goal.
Strengthening Nepal-Russia Mountaineering Ties
Chatur Tamang currently divides his time between Nepal and Russia. During the climbing season in Russia, he leads international expeditions on Mount Elbrus, while he also brings Russian climbers to the Himalayas and guides them on expeditions in Nepal.
Through his work, Tamang has contributed to strengthening people-to-people relations and mountaineering ties between Nepal and Russia. His career has also helped introduce international climbers to Nepal’s Himalayan mountains while promoting the skills and expertise of Nepali mountain guides on the global stage.
