China National Tourist Office in Kathmandu will be conducting a seminar on September 21 to discuss the recovery and development of Nepal’s tourism industry, crisis communication and future directions following the devastating ‘8.26’ landslide disaster.
The seminar will also see the participation of tourism experts, government representatives, tourism professionals, journalists, and other stakeholders in assessing the impact of the disaster on Nepal’s tourism industry and exploring practical approaches for restoring visitor confidence and strengthening the sector’s resilience. Representatives from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), Nepal Tourist Guides Association, Nepal Chinese Tour Guides Association, travel agencies, and media organizations will participate in the discussions.

Tourism Industry Assesses Impact of ‘8.26’ Disaster
Participating stakeholders will be sharing experiences and observations from areas affected by the landslide disaster, including insights from journalists and tourism professionals who have worked on the ground. Individuals with first-hand experience of disaster rescue and relief efforts will also be sharing their perspectives on emergency response and rescue operations in the communities and tourism businesses impacted by the disaster. The seminar will explore the impact of the disaster on tourism activities, travel confidence, tourist movement, destination communication and tourism businesses. The need for timely and accurate information during and after disasters was also emphasized, particularly with misinformation or incomplete information influencing travelers’ perceptions of destinations.

The discussions will also focus on the need for stronger coordination among tourism authorities, local stakeholders, travel companies, guides, media organizations and emergency response agencies. This coordination, the participants emphasized, will ensure that reliable information about destination conditions, road access, tourism infrastructure and safety reaches domestic and international travelers.
Focus on Tourism Recovery and Crisis Communication
A key element of the seminar is post-disaster tourism recovery and crisis communication. Participants will be exchanging views on how Nepal can communicate the actual situation in affected and unaffected destinations while supporting the recovery of tourism businesses and maintaining international confidence in Nepal as a travel destination. Tourism professionals with experience in the affected areas will emphasize the importance of responsible communication when it comes to crises.
They will discuss the need for providing travelers with updated information about accessibility, safety and available tourism services instead of allowing isolated incidents to shape perceptions about the entire country. The seminar will also look at strategies for the recovery and development of its tourism market. Stakeholders will discuss the role of tourism promotion, destination information, media engagement and cooperation among public sector and private sector stakeholders. Strengthening disaster preparedness and developing more resilient tourism systems will also be identified as important elements for the tourism sector’s long-term development.

Strengthening China-Nepal Tourism Cooperation
The seminar will also see a discussion of China-Nepal tourism cooperation and potential areas to strengthen tourism exchanges between the two countries. Participants will explore how closer cooperation among tourism authorities, travel agencies, tour guides, media and other tourism stakeholders can support the recovery and future growth of tourism between China and Nepal.

China is an important tourism partner for Nepal, and effective communication and cooperation will be significant for promoting its destinations and tourism products in the Chinese market. Greater cooperation in tourism information sharing, destination promotion, crisis communication and market development will contribute to stronger tourism relations between Nepal and China.
The seminar ultimately aims to bring together the collective efforts of Nepal and China’s tourism stakeholders to support the recovery of its tourism industry after the disaster and identify ways of building a safer, more attractive and more resilient tourism sector. The discussions will emphasize the importance of preparedness, coordinated communication and responsible tourism promotion as well as stronger cooperation among tourism stakeholders as Nepal seeks to recover and develop its tourism industry in the wake of the devastating ‘8.26’ landslide disaster.
