Kaski Issues Trekking Warning as Cyclone Arnab Raises Heavy Rain and Snowfall Risks

The District Administration Office of Kaski has urged residents and visitors to remain highly alert as the possible indirect effects of Cyclone Arnab could bring heavy rainfall, snowfall, floods, landslides and avalanches across the district and surrounding areas.

The District Administration Office of Kaski issued the advisory based on a weather bulletin from Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, warning of potentially adverse conditions from October 29 to 31, 2026. The warning is particularly relevant to tourism, as heavy rain and snow could disrupt trekking, road travel and other outdoor activities in Nepal’s high hills and Himalayan regions.

Heavy Rainfall and Snowfall Raise Safety Concerns

According to the advisory, Kaski and nearby areas could experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Higher hill and Himalayan areas could receive heavy snowfall, increasing the risk of avalanches and hazardous travel conditions.

Ramesh Gharti, assistant chief district officer and information officer at the Kaski District Administration Office, warned that deteriorating weather could increase river levels, trigger flash floods and landslides, and cause road subsidence. Residents and visitors were urged to monitor conditions and avoid areas vulnerable to weather-related hazards.

Tourists Advised to Postpone High Altitude Treks

The District Administration Office of Kaski has advised tourists planning to trek in high hill and Himalayan areas to postpone their journeys while the adverse weather risk persists. Those already on trekking routes have been urged to remain in safe locations because snowfall, snowstorms and avalanches could endanger travelers.

The warning highlights potential disruption to Nepal’s mountain tourism during the autumn travel season. Trekkers, guides and tourism operators should follow official weather updates, assess route conditions and prioritize safety over continuing planned itineraries during hazardous conditions.

Korala Border Travel Faces Weather Related Risks

Authorities in Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Mustang, have also warned transport operators, drivers, traders and tourists against travelling toward the Korala border while weather conditions remain unfavorable. Snowfall could make roads slippery, increase the risk of vehicle accidents and temporarily block access routes.

The municipality has recommended postponing journeys toward the border until conditions improve. The warning is important for travelers using northern Mustang routes, where snow and poor road conditions can affect vehicle movement and access to destinations. Travelers should confirm road conditions with local authorities before departure.

Authorities Urge Precautions Against Floods and Landslides

The Kaski administration has asked the public to avoid riverbanks and streams, particularly for swimming, fishing, washing clothes, collecting construction materials or gathering driftwood. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to monitor rising water levels and move to safer locations promptly if conditions deteriorate. Drivers have also been told not to park vehicles near rivers, streams or flood-prone riverbeds and to avoid unnecessary journeys.

The administration has urged parents to keep children away from hazardous areas and encouraged everyone to follow official safety instructions. In an emergency, people can contact the nearest police office, Nepal Police’s emergency number 100, or the disaster information and rescue toll free number 1234. Visitors and tourism businesses should remain alert to changing conditions and make travel decisions based on updated official guidance.
