New Trekking Route to Tilicho Lake Opens, Offering a Scenic Alternative

A newly developed trekking route to Tilicho Lake, the world’s highest lake located at 4,919 meters above sea level in Manang district, has recently come into operation. The new trail, starting from Thini in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality-5, Jomsom, Mustang district, offers trekkers an alternative route to this famous destination, which was previously accessible via Chame in Manang through Khangsar.

Gharapjhong Rural Municipality Chairperson Mohan Singh Lalchan shared that domestic tourists have already begun using the new trekking path. The route takes hikers through several stunning landmarks, including Namakhu Lake, Nilgiri Icefall, Chema Tal, and Mesokondo Pass, providing a fresh adventure for those seeking to experience the beauty of the Annapurna region.

The new footpath was developed by the Gharapjhong Rural Municipality with support from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). The local government allocated Rs 5 million for the project, while ACAP contributed Rs 1 million. Chairperson Lalchan mentioned that the new trail allows trekkers to complete a round-trip to Tilicho Lake from Jomsom within two days. The journey consists of a two-hour drive from Jomsom followed by a six-hour trek.

Despite the scenic beauty of the new route, trekkers should be prepared for the lack of infrastructure, as there are currently no hotels or restaurants along the way. Trekkers must arrange their own meals and accommodations.

One recent hiker, Tula Buda Magar from Myagdi district, shared his experience of trekking to Tilicho Lake via the new trail. “It took me an hour on foot from Mesokondo Pass to reach the lake. The challenging uphill trek was worth it as the stunning panoramic view of the blue crystal-clear lake rewarded my efforts,” he said.

ACAP’s Pramod Raj Regmi added that informative signboards have been installed along the route to guide trekkers, enhancing the overall experience.

The new trekking trail to Tilicho Lake offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional route, with breathtaking scenery and a challenging but rewarding adventure for nature enthusiasts.
