Chhange Waterfall, located in Khartamchha, Bhojpur, stands as the tallest waterfall in the district, with a height of 139 meters. In recent times, this natural wonder has been drawing increasing numbers of tourists.
Locals regard the waterfall as a beautiful gift of nature. Situated in Shadanand Municipality-3, Khartamchha, the site has the potential to become a significant source of income for the area, as domestic tourists have started visiting regularly.
The waterfall is a hub for two major fairs held annually during the full moons of Bhadra and Baisakh. Besides the fairs, people are also visiting to admire the waterfall and pay homage at the nearby religious site, which locals believe could further evolve into a key tourist destination with adequate promotion.
To improve access, Shadanand Municipality and the Koshi Provincial Government are investing in the development of the area by constructing a staircase leading to the waterfall. Additionally, seating areas and drinking water facilities are being provided for visitors.
The site is also home to Chhange Dham, where devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled, and ailments are cured after paying respects. Local resident Indra Prasad Dhamala shared, “The waterfall is naturally very beautiful. People come here with the belief that their desires will be fulfilled after visiting the site. Although it is geographically remote, with proper conservation and promotion, this location has the potential to boost domestic tourism. The government needs to pay more attention to its development.”
Dhamala emphasized that improving infrastructure, such as roads and footpaths, would make it easier for tourists to access the site. Although nature has gifted the area with beauty, its full potential remains untapped.
Another local, Dev Chandra Rai, stressed the importance of further development, stating, “This place holds religious significance for people of all faiths, and the state needs to focus on developing it. Unfortunately, the district’s tallest waterfall has yet to receive the attention it deserves.”
Shadanand Municipality is currently preparing a detailed project report to present to the federal and provincial governments, seeking budget allocation to further develop Chhange Waterfall into a reliable source of income for the local community, according to Mayor Surendrakumar Udas.
