Long-Distance Marathon Race ‘Solukhumbu Trail 2024’ Kicks Off

The long-distance marathon event, ‘Solukhumbu Trail 2024’, commenced on Monday, starting from Dhap in Ward No. 8 of Solududhkunda Municipality and stretching to Kala Patthar near the Everest Base Camp, before returning to Dhap.

Organized by Running in Nepal, the competition covers a distance of 310 kilometers and is set to conclude in 15 days. According to the head of the organizing committee and international runner Da Chhiri Dawa Sherpa, a total of 23 participants, comprising both domestic and international athletes, are taking part in the marathon. Among them, 20 international runners hail from countries such as France, Switzerland, and Italy, while only three Nepali runners are competing.

The participants will start their journey from Dhap, passing through Pike, Dudhkunda, Phakding, Namche, and Thame, before reaching Kala Patthar. From there, they will make their way back through Namche, Payya, Taksindu, and Phaplu, ultimately concluding the race in Salleri, as explained by race coordinator Phuchiring Sherpa. The mayor of Solududhkunda Municipality, Namgel Jangbu Sherpa, inaugurated the event, marking the official start of the race.

This marathon is held to promote tourism in the region, as stated by the organizers. “Our team consists not only of runners but also photographers and medical personnel, which will significantly contribute to the promotion of Nepal’s tourism,” remarked Da Chhiri Dawa Sherpa. He added, “Conducting a long-distance event in the vicinity of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, sends a unique message to the world.”

Local authorities also expect the participation of international athletes to bring attention to lesser-known tourist areas. “Their race will greatly aid in identifying and promoting new tourist destinations,” stated Mayor Namgel Jangbu Sherpa.

The event promises to be a remarkable showcase of Nepal’s natural beauty and potential as a premier destination for adventure tourism.
