Adverse Weather Disrupts Domestic Flights from Kathmandu

Flights from Kathmandu to various remote mountainous destinations have been significantly impacted today due to adverse weather conditions, primarily characterized by low visibility.

Jagannath Niraula, General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), reported that flights to Lukla Airport were specifically halted due to dense haze. “The flights to remote areas have been affected due to bad weather. However, flights to Tarai districts are operating as scheduled,” he stated.

In the domestic sector, only flights adhering to Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) are currently operating at Kathmandu Airport. Unfortunately, Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flights have been canceled due to the prevailing weather conditions. This disruption has left a considerable number of tourists stranded, as flights to the mountainous districts have been hindered.

Despite these challenges in domestic travel, international flights at TIA continue to operate normally. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the adverse weather is being influenced by a combination of westerly and local winds, along with a low-pressure system near West Bengal, India, affecting weather patterns across the country.

Travelers are advised to stay updated on flight status and be prepared for possible delays or cancellations in the coming days.
