The complete reconstruction of the historic Amargadhi Fort, located in the district headquarters of Surkhet, has increased the fort’s importance owing to Amar Singh Thapa’s efforts.
The Amargadhi Fort, previously recognizable only by its old and dilapidated remains, has regained significance with the removal of the remnants of Thapa’s wall and the establishment of a new wall.
Now established as Amargadhi Fort from the name Thapa, the historic site is attracting both domestic and international tourists, thanks to the joint initiative of the Nepal Army and the local government.
According to Dilli Raj Joshi, Mayor of Amargadhi Municipality, the unveiling of the new Amargadhi Fort premises, including the newly established Amar Singh Thapa Memorial, has drawn the attention of tourists. He expressed confidence that the removal of the old wall and the establishment of a new one would not only enhance the beauty of the fort but also contribute to the promotion of tourism.
Joshi also provided information that, as a center of tourist attraction, the fort precinct is equipped with various historical artifacts and archaeological objects, including weapons, cannons, and fortifications, making it easier to attract tourists.
The replacement of the old wall with a new one, matching the original style, has been a significant endeavor, according to Mayor Joshi. He stated that the efforts to raise the fort’s glory have been ongoing for the past year and have now culminated in the successful installation of the new wall.
Joshi highlighted that efforts are underway to preserve the historical and archaeological sites in the Amaragadhi Fort area to attract more tourists and ensure the protection of historical heritage.
Moreover, Joshi emphasized the need for collective efforts to restore and develop other historical sites in the district, as their preservation is essential for maintaining the rich history and culture of the region.
Amargadhi Fort, along with other historical sites like Ajaymerukot, also serves as a religious center in the district. Organizations dedicated to the preservation of heritage and culture are focusing their attention on these areas for conservation and development, according to the Department of Archaeology.
In addition to Ugratara Temple, Ghatal Than, Amargadhi Municipality also boasts various religious and tourist sites. Historians claim that during the reign of King Rana Bahadur Shah, the Gorkhali army camped at Amargadhi Fort for a long time.
Founder Prime Minister Mohar Narayan Thapa provided insights into the history of Amargadhi, which was named after him, even mentioning that during the unification of Nepal in 1847 BS, Bahadur Thapa established the foundation area of the Doti state as Kumaon Garhwal.
Established in 2054 BS under the name Amargadhi, Amargadhi Municipality took over the fort in 2056 BS. After being taken over by the Nepali army for security reasons during the People’s War in 2058 BS, an observation and prohibition were imposed. Now, it has been opened to the general public, attracting both domestic and international tourists for daily fort tours, both inside and out.
