Sokla Rock Scaled: A Bold New Chapter in Adventure Tourism

In a groundbreaking step for adventure tourism in Nepal, a group of 13 American citizens has successfully completed a rock climbing expedition at Sokla Valley, Dolakha. This marks the first time foreign tourists have scaled the Sokla Rock, situated at an altitude of 420 meters, under the management of the Soklashwari Tourism Development Society.

Rock Climbing Expedition at Sokla Valley

The expedition was led by a team from Southeastern University, Florida, USA, including renowned professor Matthew Burnett. Other team members included Alexander Joshua, Izzy Viel, Andrew Ian, Isabella Kolewan, and Deb. Their ascent represents a significant milestone for Dolakha’s adventure tourism potential, according to the Society’s chairman, Arjun Pakhrin.

Guided by Amaradeep Bantawa from Ilam’s Maipokhari, the American team reached the valley after their participation in the Everest trek. The visitors were warmly welcomed by the local community through traditional Tamang cultural rituals, which added a vibrant cultural touch to their adventure.

Professor Matthew Burnett, after completing the climb, described the experience as one of the most memorable of his life. “This is my third visit to Nepal, but my first time in Dolakha. I feel lucky to have been part of the Sokla rock climbing expedition. It was an incredible experience that will help prepare me for Everest Base Camp next year,” he said.

His team member, Izzy Viel, shared a similar sentiment, stating, “This was my first time rock climbing. I was initially scared, but my courage got me to the top. This has become one of the most thrilling experiences of my life.” Andrew, another climber, confessed his fear upon seeing the vertical cliff face. “We’ve never experienced anything like this before. But reaching the top gave us a breathtaking view of the entire Sokla Valley, the Tamakoshi River, and the Gaurishankar mountain range.

I have seen hills before, but never a place where cliffs, villages, rivers, forests, and snow-capped peaks come together in one view.” Adding to the cultural exchange, Professor Burnett announced that the South Stern University would showcase the Sokla Rock Climbing expedition through a special logo and memory display at their institution. “We will proudly display the cultural tokens and memories of Sokla Valley at our university. This is our tribute to Nepal’s rich heritage and adventure tourism,” he added.

In addition to the American team, 39 students from the Himalayan Crown Academy also participated in the event. Among them, Kabita Tamang secured first place, Ritika Maya Magar second, and Nima David Sherpa third. All participants were honored with prizes and certificates by the Soklashwari Tourism Development Society.

The event, officially titled Sokla Rock Climbing Phase 2082, was supported by various local stakeholders and marked a significant step in the promotion of Dolakha as an adventure destination. During the closing ceremony, Dolakha District President of the Nepali Congress, BArma Lama, also participated in rock climbing and distributed certificates to all participants.

Speaking at the event, Lama emphasized the importance of such activities in boosting local tourism and the economy. “Sokla Valley has the potential to become a cornerstone for adventure tourism in Dolakha. This climbing initiative will surely open new doors for economic development through tourism,” he remarked.

The Soklashwari Tourism Development Society has been promoting rock climbing in the region for the past five years with the vision of turning Sokla Valley into a hub for adventure seekers. Chairman Arjun Pakhrin expressed his pride in finally seeing foreign tourists take part in their efforts. “This is just the beginning. Our dream of establishing Sokla Valley as an international adventure tourism destination is coming true,” he said.

With the success of this international rock climbing event, Sokla Valley is now being recognized as a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adrenaline-filled adventure. The integration of local traditions, scenic vistas, and challenging terrains makes it a promising location for both domestic and international adventure lovers.

As word spreads and more climbers take interest, Sokla Valley stands poised to become a prominent name in Nepal’s growing list of adventure tourism destinations. Local authorities, tourism promoters, and the community are hopeful that this initiative will further attract climbers, trekkers, and nature lovers from around the world.
