Bardiya National Park Sees Rise in Tourist Arrivals, Boosting Local Economy

Bardiya National Park (BNP), a prime tourist destination in the far-western region of Tarai, has reported a significant increase in tourist arrivals, contributing to the revitalization of local tourism enterprises and boosting revenue.

BNP, known for its rich biodiversity, attracts visitors eager to witness tigers, gharials, and a variety of bird species. Conservation Officer Purushottam Wagle highlighted that the rise in tourist numbers has been encouraging for tourism businesses, which are gradually recovering from the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the fiscal year 2079/80, BNP welcomed 24,324 tourists, generating revenue of Rs 22 million. The following fiscal year, 2080/81, saw an increase to 26,131 tourists, resulting in a revenue boost to Rs 28.4 million.

To accommodate the growing number of visitors, BNP has emphasized improving service delivery and expanding tourism infrastructure. New jungle trails have been established for walking and driving tours within the park. Additionally, efforts are underway to increase the number of hotels and homestays, ensuring that tourists have access to adequate amenities.

Both domestic and international tourists are drawn to BNP. Tourism entrepreneur Ramaji Thapa noted that the influx of new visitors has invigorated the local community. Tourists particularly enjoy experiencing Tharu culture, including their cuisine and festivals. “Foreign tourists are mesmerized by the biodiversity here,” Thapa remarked, adding that the park provides prompt rescue services if safari vehicles encounter issues.

Tourist guide Anuram Chaudhari reported that there are over 30 tourist hotels and homestays in the BNP area. He also mentioned that foreign tourists often prefer exploring the park on foot rather than using safari vehicles.

With continuous efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and services, Bardiya National Park is poised to attract even more visitors, further benefiting the local economy and promoting the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
