Belbari, Nestled along the East-West Highway, Belbari has swiftly risen to prominence as a favored destination among domestic tourists seeking tranquility amidst natural splendor. This picturesque locale has also captured the interest of international visitors from Siberia and beyond, drawn not only by its scenic landscapes but also by the opportunity to encounter a rich array of wildlife including deer, turtles, fish, and over 25 rare bird species.
Shambhu Bhattarai, President of the Betana Simsaar Community Forest User Group, highlighted the area’s allure, encompassing approximately 65 hectares of pristine land. “Betana Simsaar offers an ideal retreat for internal tourists, with its clean air, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking vistas,” he remarked. He added that guided tours, featuring pedal boat rides on the lake, have been introduced to enhance visitor experiences.
Betana Simsaar is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, boasting 25 rare turtle species, various fish types, and other wildlife, including those under the critically endangered ‘Softshell Turtle’ category, numbering more than two dozen, according to President Bhattarai.
The local Consumer Committee actively oversees the conservation efforts of the region’s unique biodiversity. “Betana Simsaar is home to globally rare turtle species, diverse fish, mammals, and plant varieties,” Bhattarai emphasized.
Sujit Basnet, Secretary of the irrigation committee managing 1,200 hectares of cultivable land irrigated by Betana Simsaar’s waters, outlined plans for further development. “In collaboration with the highway sector, efforts are underway to beautify the area with flower gardens, resting spots, and forest dining facilities to enrich the tourism experience,” he disclosed.
Mayor Dil Prasad Rai of Belbari Municipality underscored Betana Simsaar’s significance as a pivotal tourist destination in Eastern Nepal, poised for developmental strides. “Recent seminars and meetings have attracted visitors from various parts of the country,” Mayor Rai shared.
With an increasing influx of internal tourists, daily visitations to Betana Simsaar have surpassed 300 and spiked to over 500 during holidays, informed President Bhattarai. “Entry tickets are priced at NPR 30,” he confirmed.
As conservation efforts continue to safeguard its distinctive biodiversity and initiatives unfold to elevate visitor engagement, Betana Simsaar in Belbari stands out as an enticing haven for both nature enthusiasts and tourists alike.
