Bichitra Cave, located in Dhurkot Rural Municipality of Gulmi district, has become a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists. Situated about 18 kilometers north of Tamghas, the district headquarters, the cave is truly remarkable, spreading across 185 meters in length and 350 meters in width.
The cave was first discovered in 1988 by resident Janardan Bhandari while chasing away a porcupine from his maize field. Initially, the cave was popular among domestic tourists, but in recent times, international visitors from France, Germany, and the UK have also explored its unique features, according to Bhupal Pokhrel, Chairman of Dhurkot Rural Municipality.
Upon entering the cave through its main entrance, visitors encounter five additional natural doorways. The cave’s allure is further enhanced by the surrounding natural beauty. Tourists visiting Bichitra Cave are often informed about its historical and religious significance. One of the most captivating sights within the cave is the ‘Path to Heaven,’ which is considered sacred. It is believed that only those who are pure of heart can pass through this narrow passage, leading to the cave’s final destination.
The cave also features several natural rock formations resembling various animals, including a massive elephant with a clearly defined trunk, body, and tail. This particular formation is regarded as the final mysterious feature of the cave, further adding to its intrigue.
Chairman Pokhrel mentioned that the development of the cave and surrounding areas has been supported by investments exceeding NPR 20 million from the Dhurkot Rural Municipality, the Province, and the Federal Government. Visitors can reach Bichitra Cave via the Madan Bhandari Highway, making it an accessible destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
