Bimalnagar Emerging as Premier Rock Climbing Hub

Bimalnagar, situated in Bandipur Rural Municipality-4 along the Prithvi Highway, is fast becoming a focal point for rock climbing enthusiasts. Renowned for its impressive rock formations such as Chunpahara, this area is evolving into a training center for mountain guides. Various organizations are conducting sessions here to produce certified mountain guides.

Instructor Lambabu Sherpa explained that the training is part of the national-level ‘Certified Component-2’ program, which includes rock climbing as a core module for guide certification. Bimalnagar’s climate is deemed ideal for building physical endurance, making it a perfect training ground. Post-rock climbing, trainees advance to ice climbing to complete their certification.

“We bring trainees here to leverage the favorable climate for endurance training,” said Sherpa. “After completing rock climbing, they move on to ice climbing to earn their certification.” Currently, fifteen trainees are enrolled in the rock climbing training program.

The rock formations at Siddha Cave are considered perfect for training, as guides must acclimate to various weather conditions. “Producing skilled guides requires them to experience different climates. Bimalnagar offers both cold and warm weather, making it an ideal training location,” Sherpa added.

The primary goal is to produce guides capable of safely leading tourists to Nepal’s mountains. Sherpa mentioned that the program has already provided basic rock climbing and ice climbing training (the first phase) to aspiring mountain guides. Trainees receive their certification only after completing a rigorous 20-day practical examination, which includes rock, glacier, and peak climbing.

Laxmi Tamang from Kavrepalanchok is currently undergoing the ‘Aspirant Guide’ training under ‘Component-2’. She highlighted the lack of skilled female guides in the country as her motivation for taking the course. “I find rock climbing here quite suitable and expect it to be even more convenient. This training not only equips me but also inspires other women to pursue adventurous activities,” Tamang said.

Bimalnagar, connected by the Prithvi Highway, attracts both domestic and international adventurers for rock climbing. The company claims to have produced over a hundred skilled guides to date. Lal Kumar Shrestha, the founding president of Bimalnagar Chunpahara Rock Climbing, noted that the area is becoming a center for adventure sports training, which contributes to local income generation.

Shrestha recalled that the initial exploration of the area began in 2007 by international mountain guides and locals. Since then, activities have progressively increased. The area serves as a preliminary training ground for those aiming to climb Nepal’s peaks. “After a few days of rock climbing here, many move on to mountain climbing. The increasing activity promotes adventure tourism,” Shrestha said, urging the government at all levels to promote the area as a tourist destination.

The development of Bimalnagar as a rock climbing center showcases the growing interest in adventure sports and the potential for tourism-driven economic development.
