Birgunj Celebrates 45th International Tourism Day with Grand Welcome for Indian Tourists

The 45th International Tourism Day was celebrated in Birgunj, a city known for its industrial and commercial significance, with a grand event organized by local hotels and tourism entrepreneurs. Indian tourists arriving through the Birgunj customs checkpoint, en route to visit Janakpurdham and Pashupatinath, were warmly welcomed at the Shankaracharya Gate in a special ceremony.

Hari Pant, president of the Hotel and Tourism Entrepreneurs’ Association of Birgunj, highlighted the importance of the day by organizing the event at the Shankaracharya Gate. He noted that while Birgunj holds great potential for religious tourism alongside its identity as an industrial and commercial hub, the tourism sector has not yet developed as expected. “Despite having over 85 hotels, including four-star hotels, Birgunj has not yet seen the growth in tourist stays that it should. It’s time to take steps to encourage longer visits,” Pant remarked.

With facilities like casinos and luxurious hotels, Birgunj caters to Indian and international tourists, who often use the city as a gateway to visit religious sites such as Pashupatinath, Janakpur, Gadhimai, and Muktinath.

“We have been actively promoting and enhancing tourism in Birgunj through various activities,” Pant stated, emphasizing the need for government support in promoting key tourist areas. He further expressed that Birgunj, alongside being an industrial and trade city, should be developed as a significant tourist destination.

Several upscale hotels and resorts, such as Diyalo Lords Plaza, Vishuwa, and Clark Resort, are now operational in Birgunj, adding to its appeal. Tourism entrepreneurs in the city acknowledge that the sector thrives primarily due to domestic and Indian tourists crossing the border.

The celebration not only marked the global significance of tourism but also shed light on Birgunj’s untapped potential as a tourist hub.
