Brunei Darussalam has launched a one-year initiative to pursue Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification for two of its leading ecotourism destinations as the country seeks to strengthen sustainable tourism and raise its profile in the international travel market.
The initiative, led by the Tourism Development Department in collaboration with the Forestry Department, covers Ulu Temburong National Park in Temburong District and Luagan Lalak Recreational Park in Belait District. The project aims to improve sustainable destination management in line with internationally recognised GSTC standards.
Initiative Supports Brunei Vision 2035
The certification project is aligned with Brunei Vision 2035, the Brunei Tourism Industry Roadmap 2024–2035, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative is expected to support environmental conservation, community wellbeing, responsible tourism management, and sustainable economic development.
By pursuing internationally recognised sustainability standards, the country aims to ensure that future tourism growth contributes to the economy without compromising the country’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
Focus on Protecting Brunei’s Rainforests
Ulu Temburong National Park is one of the country’s most important ecotourism destinations and is located in a region widely known as Brunei’s “Green Jewel.” The park protects vast areas of rainforest and offers visitors opportunities to experience rivers, dense jungle, biodiversity, and canopy landscapes.
With nearly 70 percent of Brunei remaining forested, the country has retained a significant natural heritage despite development across Southeast Asia. The GSTC initiative is expected to strengthen the management of these natural areas and establish a more structured approach to sustainable tourism.
It Seeks Tourism Growth Without Mass Tourism
Unlike many Southeast Asian destinations that have built tourism industries around high visitor volumes, large resorts, nightlife, and entertainment complexes, Brunei is seeking to develop a more carefully managed tourism model.
The country is positioning itself around nature, culture, conservation, safety, and authentic experiences. The government believes that international sustainability certification can help strengthen its position as a responsible tourism destination while ensuring that tourism development remains compatible with environmental protection.
A New Direction for Brunei’s Tourism Industry
Its tourism industry remains relatively small compared with regional tourism giants. However, growing global demand for sustainable and nature-based travel could create new opportunities for the country.
Through the GSTC certification initiative, it is seeking to build a tourism model that prioritises long-term environmental protection, community benefits, and quality visitor experiences over mass tourism.
