A technical malfunction caused the Chandragiri Cable Car to stop mid-journey, leaving passengers stranded on Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 PM. The incident occurred in Chandragiri Municipality, creating a tense situation for those trapped in the cable cars.
According to Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari from the Kathmandu District Police Range, approximately 50 to 60 passengers were left hanging in the cable cars due to the sudden stoppage. Upon receiving the distress call, both Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force were dispatched to the site for rescue operations.
SP Adhikari reported that eight passengers who were near a tower have been successfully rescued. “Efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety and rescue of the remaining passengers,” he added.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Shailendra Thapa, spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, stated that a 26-member team was deployed from the Pashupatinath Battalion Headquarters in Balambu after receiving the alert at 2:30 PM. DSP Thapa mentioned that passengers were stranded in about seven to eight cable car cabins, although the exact number of passengers is still unknown.
Rescue operations are continuing, and authorities are working diligently to bring all passengers to safety. The cause of the technical problem is under investigation, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
