Chhabi Barahi Waterfall in Tanahun: A Hidden Gem Awaiting Tourism Boost

Nestled amidst dense forests and captivating greenery, the Chhabi Barahi Waterfall near Chhabi, Byas Municipality-14, is a natural wonder that mesmerizes all who visit. Despite its allure, the lack of promotion has hindered its potential as a prime tourist destination.

Located approximately 30 minutes east of Barahi Temple through the main town of Damauli, the journey to the waterfall is a mix of uphill and flat terrain, offering a refreshing escape. The water cascading down the rocks from the high cliffs is fed by a stream originating from Kulung village in Ward No. 14.

Sudip Gaffar, a resident of Byas Municipality-2, Bagbazar, who visited the waterfall, remarked on its untapped potential as a tourist hotspot. “The cool water and the soothing atmosphere provide immense relief during the scorching heat of Damauli,” he said. “The cold water and lush surroundings make it a perfect spot, especially in summer. It could significantly benefit from being linked to religious tourism, attracting devotees visiting Chhabi Barahi Temple.”

Sunil Shrestha from Byas Municipality-1 echoed similar sentiments. He noted that the tranquil environment and refreshing water make it a delightful spot. He urged local authorities to focus on promoting the waterfall to increase visitor footfall.

Ward Chairperson Kajiman Shrestha of Byas Municipality-14 shared that efforts were made a few years ago to promote tourism by introducing canyoning at the waterfall, but the initiative did not achieve the desired success. “Thousands of devotees visit Chhabi Barahi Temple from various districts, but we haven’t been able to guide them to the waterfall,” he said. “Creating an accessible path from the temple to the waterfall could significantly enhance tourism, but our efforts alone are not enough.”

Shrestha highlighted the challenges posed by limited budget resources. About 100 meters of the path to the waterfall have been paved, but more infrastructure development is needed. “With the ward’s small budget, we haven’t been able to accomplish much. We need support from the municipality and other stakeholders to develop the necessary infrastructure and promote this beautiful site,” he added.

For Chhabi Barahi Waterfall to realize its full potential as a tourist destination, a collaborative effort from the local government, stakeholders, and the community is essential. With proper infrastructure and promotion, this hidden gem can attract more visitors and contribute to the local economy.
