Chinese Man Defies Limits: Aiming to Conquer 50 Mountains with Bare Hands

We often feel lazy to hike or go trekking, and for some, it can be quite challenging. However, a 38-year-old Chinese man, Sun Go Shan, has taken on the incredible feat of climbing one of his country’s famous mountains using only his hands.

Sun began practicing hand-assisted climbing in May 2023 and declared his goal to climb the 50 most famous mountains in China within a year. Previously working in the education sector, he realized the importance of health during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to spread awareness about health training while honoring the beautiful mountainous regions of his country.

He officially started his hand-assisted mountain climbing in May 2024, but he went viral last November when a video of him climbing the highest peak of the Wudang Mountains, Haibai, at an altitude of 1,612 meters using his hands was released. He stated, “Every Chinese person has a martial arts dream in their heart. But I want to use my special climbing method to ascend the 50 most famous mountains in my country.”

In December, Sun spent five hours climbing 999 steps of Tianmen Mountain in Hunan Province using his hands, making it the hardest and 34th mountain he has climbed. By this spring, he plans to complete his goal of climbing 50 Chinese mountains using only his hands and intends to apply for a record in the Guinness Book of World Records.
