Tourist destinations in Chitwan have witnessed a noticeable rise in visitor arrivals following the government’s decision to implement a two-day weekly holiday system. Tourism entrepreneurs in Sauraha report that the flow of both domestic and international tourists has increased significantly in recent weeks, marking a positive shift in the region’s tourism recovery and seasonal performance.
Two-Day Weekend Driving Domestic Travel Boom
The surge in tourist numbers has been particularly evident after the government officially introduced Saturday and Sunday as weekly holidays starting April 6. Tourism operators in Sauraha say this policy change has directly encouraged short-distance travel, especially from Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other major urban centers.
According to hotel entrepreneurs, weekends are now witnessing a sharp rise in domestic tourists, who are taking advantage of the extended break for leisure travel, jungle safaris, and family vacations. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, hotel occupancy rates have improved significantly compared to previous months, creating renewed optimism in the local hospitality sector.
During weekends, domestic tourists now outnumber foreign arrivals, while on weekdays international tourists account for nearly 70 percent of total visitors. This represents a major improvement compared to last year, when foreign tourists contributed only around 40 percent of the overall visitor share.
Sauraha Emerging as a Multi-Activity Tourism Hub
Sauraha is increasingly becoming more than just a wildlife destination, evolving into a versatile tourism hub for seminars, corporate retreats, destination weddings, and social gatherings. Regional Hotel Association Vice Chair Gunaraj Thapaliya noted that such diversified tourism activities have helped stabilize visitor flow beyond traditional jungle safari tourism.
Tourism entrepreneurs say that Sauraha’s appeal lies in its combination of natural beauty, accessibility, and expanding hospitality infrastructure. With improved tourism services, the region is now attracting a wider demographic, including corporate groups and event-based travelers.
Elephant Safari Demand Peaks During Holidays
Tourism activities such as elephant safaris remain one of the major attractions in Sauraha. According to Dipendra Khatiwada, Chair of the United Elephant Safari Operation Cooperatives Ltd, visitors often have to wait for their turn during peak holiday periods due to high demand.
The cooperative operates around 25 elephants, offering safari experiences in both morning and evening shifts. Khatiwada, who is also a former Chair of the Restaurant and Bar Association, said that tourist arrivals this year are notably higher than in the same period last year, particularly during weekends and public holidays.
Strong Hospitality Investment and Employment Generation
Sauraha currently hosts around 148 hotels, with a total accommodation capacity of approximately 7,200 guests. The Chitwan area has attracted investments exceeding Rs 40 billion, making it one of Nepal’s most significant tourism investment zones outside Kathmandu and Pokhara.
The tourism sector in Sauraha has created substantial employment opportunities, generating direct jobs for around 6,400 individuals and indirect employment for more than 12,000 people. From hotel staff and safari operators to local guides and transport services, the tourism economy has become a key livelihood source for the region.
Hotel Vista Sauraha proprietor Ramesh Silwal noted that increased tourist arrivals are a natural outcome of extended holidays and improved travel planning opportunities among domestic travelers. He expressed optimism that the upward trend will continue in the coming months.
Infrastructure Challenges and Seasonal Fluctuations in Chitwan
Despite the encouraging growth, tourism entrepreneurs have highlighted infrastructure challenges as a key barrier to further expansion. They emphasized that improving road connectivity between Kathmandu, Bhairahawa, and Chitwan would significantly enhance tourist accessibility and comfort.
At present, road conditions along major travel routes are considered below optimal standards, affecting travel time and convenience for both domestic and international visitors in Chitwan. Additionally, tourism stakeholders remain cautious about seasonal fluctuations. Tourist arrivals typically decline during the monsoon season, which is expected to begin within a month. Heavy rainfall, slippery roads, and reduced safari activity often lead to a temporary slowdown in visitor numbers.
Outlook for Sustainable Tourism Growth in Chitwan
Despite seasonal challenges, tourism entrepreneurs remain optimistic about the long-term growth trajectory of Chitwan’s tourism industry. The introduction of the two-day weekend has already demonstrated its positive impact on domestic tourism, while steady international arrivals continue to support weekday business in Chitwan.
With continued investment, improved infrastructure, and diversified tourism offerings, Sauraha is expected to further strengthen its position as one of Nepal’s leading wildlife and leisure tourism destinations.
