Nepali climber Bijay Ghimire died in the Khumbu Icefall on Sunday morning while heading from Everest Base Camp toward the higher camps on Mount Everest, officials confirmed. Ghimire, a resident of Solu Dudhkunda Municipality in Solukhumbu district, was an experienced climber who had successfully summited Everest four times in the past.
Besides mountaineering, he was also widely known as a popular YouTuber documenting Himalayan expeditions and adventure-related content. According to officials, Ghimire was part of an Everest expedition managed by TAG Nepal Treks and Expeditions.
Body of Bijay Ghimire Airlifted to Lukla
Rescue officials said his body was recovered from the Khumbu Icefall area and airlifted to Lukla by Altitude Air for further procedures. The exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed. However, preliminary reports suggest that he may have suffered a cardiac arrest while ascending through the dangerous icefall section above Everest Base Camp. Authorities and expedition officials said further details regarding the incident are still awaited.
Second Everest Fatality of the Season
Ghimire’s death marks the second fatality of the current Everest climbing season. Earlier, a Sherpa guide reportedly died near Everest Base Camp above Gorakshep during expedition operations.
The Khumbu Icefall, located between Everest Base Camp and Camp I, is considered one of the most technically hazardous sections of the Everest climbing route due to constantly shifting ice towers, deep crevasses, and avalanche risks.
The mountaineering community and fellow climbers have expressed sorrow over the loss of the experienced Nepali climber, remembering him for his contribution to Himalayan adventure tourism and mountain storytelling through digital media.
