Climber’s Conference In Thame Highlights Urgent Need For Climate Action And Reconstruction

The “Climber’s Conference on Climate Justice Dialogue” was held in Thame. During the event, Defense Minister Manbir Rai emphasized the need for unity in the Earth-saving campaign, urging Nepal to collaborate with national and international communities. He highlighted the impact of climate change, particularly the floods caused by glacial lake outbursts, which have devastated the tourist town of Thame.

The government is committed to the reconstruction of Thame. Minister Rai called for collective efforts to mitigate climate change and assured that the government is taking steps. Minister of Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, announced that the government will lead the reconstruction efforts for communities affected by climate change-related disasters. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the people of Khumbu.

Princess Asma Al Thani of Qatar, a Mount Everest climber, stressed the importance of addressing climate change in all development efforts. She warned that the reduction in Himalayan snow is a major concern and called for collective action. She further stated that the reconstruction of flood-affected areas like Thame should involve not only Nepal but the global community as well.

Press Council of Nepal Chairman, Balkrishna Basnet, suggested that all levels of government should plan systematically for the reconstruction of Thame. Karma Sherpa, Senior Vice President of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), highlighted the delays in rebuilding tourism infrastructure affected by floods in the Everest region and urged the government to take action.

The event concluded with a five-point declaration, stressing the importance of raising the issues of flood and landslide victims, including Thame, during the upcoming Sagarmatha Dialogue on May 2. The declaration also called for unity among climbers and others involved in the cause. The event was supported by organizations like the Nepal Tourism Board and the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
