Construction and reconstruction works have begun on the Mundum Trail, located in Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality of Bhojpur district, with a focus on developing the trekking route along with essential peripheral infrastructure. The initiative aims to strengthen the trail as a culturally rich and sustainable tourism destination in eastern Nepal.
According to Jeevan Kirati, Chairperson of the Construction Committee, new trekking sections are being built in areas where no trail previously existed, particularly along the Chakhewa to Maiyum stretch. In addition, damaged and deteriorated trail sections are undergoing reconstruction to ensure safety, accessibility, and quality for trekkers.
Integration of Kirat Mundum Culture
The trail development project places strong emphasis on preserving and showcasing Kirat Mundum culture. Kirati stated that various cultural symbols and artistic elements inspired by Mundum traditions will be incorporated into the trail’s structures, helping to create a distinctive identity that reflects the indigenous heritage of the region.
“The construction is not just about physical infrastructure but also about cultural storytelling,” Kirati said, adding that the trail will represent the spiritual and cultural values of the Kirat community.
Tourist-Friendly Facilities Planned
To enhance visitor comfort and experience, several tourist-friendly facilities are being constructed along the trail. These include parks, public toilets, resting shelters, and designated viewpoints, ensuring convenience for both domestic and international trekkers.
For efficient implementation, two separate committees have been formed, one responsible for trail construction and reconstruction, and the other tasked with developing peripheral infrastructure. Approximately 150 laborers are currently engaged in the project, contributing to local employment generation.
Long-Term Vision for Self-Reliant Development
Saroj Basnet, Chairperson of Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality, stated that the local government is advancing the project with a long-term vision of self-reliance, integrating tourism development with agriculture and local livelihoods.
“We aim to develop the Mundum Trail as one of the most important tourist destinations in eastern Nepal,” Basnet said. “With that goal, we are committed to building an attractive, high-quality trekking route that benefits the local community and promotes sustainable tourism.”
Rising Tourist Attraction
Blessed with natural beauty and rich Mundum cultural heritage, the trail offers visitors a unique blend of experiences. Trekkers can enjoy cool alpine weather, panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, rolling hills, breathtaking sunrises, and expansive meadows. The area is also home to a wide variety of medicinal herbs, bird species, and wildlife, including the red panda, making it an emerging destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
In recent years, the Mundum Trail has witnessed growing interest from both domestic and international tourists, driven by its unspoiled landscapes and authentic cultural appeal. Local authorities believe that the ongoing construction and upgrading works will significantly improve accessibility and service quality, positioning the Mundum Trail as a model destination for community-based and culturally immersive tourism in eastern Nepal.
