COVID-19 Travel Restrictions Eased for Third-Country Tourists at Nepal-India Border

The travel restrictions for third-country tourists crossing from Nepal to India have been lifted, thanks to the efforts of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. This easing of restrictions has led to smoother transit through the Nepal-India border points.

Following his assumption of office in the first week of Shrawan, Home Minister Lekhak discussed the issue with Indian Ambassador Naveen Kumar Srivastava. They addressed the need to remove immigration barriers for third-country nationals at border entry points connected to India.

From the second week of Shrawan, the Indian authorities reinstated regular immigration services, which has facilitated easier movement of tourists from Jhapa to Kanchanpur. According to a statement from the Home Ministry, all border points connected with India, except for the Pashupatinagar checkpoint in Ilam, are now operating smoothly for tourists.

Immigration Department spokesperson Prem Dahal confirmed that the resumption of immigration services has made travel more convenient. Since the easing of restrictions, 78 third-country tourists have exited from the Kakarbhitta checkpoint to India, while 114 tourists have entered Nepal. Similarly, from Mohana in Kailali, one third-country tourist has entered Nepal, and at the Birgunj checkpoint, 30 tourists have exited while 37 have entered. Additionally, at the Gaddachauki checkpoint in Kanchanpur, nine third-country tourists have exited and 12 have entered.

This development marks a significant improvement in the ease of travel across the Nepal-India border for international tourists.
