Weather Update: Powerful Winds and Moisture Bring Unstable Conditions Across Nepal

Nepal is currently experiencing the influence of multiple weather systems, including the westerly and local winds, combined with moisture-laden winds entering from the Bay of Bengal, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

These combined atmospheric conditions have resulted in widespread changes in the country’s weather patterns. The Division reports that the weather today will remain partly to generally cloudy across Nepal, with light to moderate precipitation likely at various places.

Specifically, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected at some locations in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Similarly, some areas in the hilly regions of Lumbini and Karnali provinces, along with isolated locations in the rest of the country, may also experience rainfall.

The Division further noted that light rain and snowfall are likely at several places in the mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces today. There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall occurring at one or two places in Koshi Province, which could result in localized waterlogging and disruptions. As for tonight’s forecast, the Division indicates that the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy throughout the country.

Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. In addition, one or two locations in the hilly regions of other provinces could also witness precipitation. Similarly, light rain and snowfall are forecasted at a few places across the mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. The possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two spots in Koshi Province persists into the night.

Public Urged to Remain Cautious

Given the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in certain areas, the Meteorological Forecasting Division has urged the public to stay cautious. Sudden changes in weather, particularly in mountainous and hilly areas, could lead to disruptions in daily activities, travel delays, and increased risks related to landslides or slippery road conditions.

Travelers, trekkers, and residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and exercise caution, especially in regions prone to landslides or flash floods during intense rainfall episodes.

Impact on Agriculture and Tourism

The current weather system could have implications for the agricultural sector, as rainfall during the growing season can both benefit and harm crops depending on the intensity and duration. Similarly, trekking routes and tourism activities in the Himalayan and hilly regions could be affected by rain and snowfall, and operators are advised to plan accordingly and ensure the safety of visitors. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology continues to monitor the evolving situation closely and will issue timely updates as necessary.
