Elite Exped has announced with “profound sadness and immense heartbreak” that renowned mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja has died following the devastating avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047m) in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range. In an official statement shared on the company’s Instagram account, Elite Exped confirmed that Purja lost his life in the avalanche and stated that other members of the expedition also did not survive. The announcement came after days of intensive search and rescue efforts following the disaster that struck the international climbing team during their summit push.

Elite Exped described Nimsdai’s death as an immeasurable loss to the global mountaineering community, saying it was mourning not only its founder but also every climber who died in the tragedy. The company specifically paid tribute to Purja’s trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” and Nima Sherpa, expressing heartfelt condolences to their families, friends and loved ones. Elite Exped requested privacy for the bereaved families, stating that no words could lessen the pain of such an unimaginable tragedy.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest high-altitude climbers of his generation, Nirmal Purja transformed modern mountaineering through a series of extraordinary achievements. Born in Nepal, Purja first served in the British Army and later in the elite Special Boat Service before dedicating himself to professional mountaineering.
He achieved worldwide recognition in 2019 after climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in just over six months, shattering the previous world record. His accomplishments redefined what many believed was physically possible and inspired climbers around the world.
Purja continued pushing the limits of high-altitude climbing through ambitious projects, including climbing all 14 eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen and his self-declared “Hat-Trick Project,” aimed at summiting all 14 of the world’s highest mountains three times.
