Final Day Of Bisket Jatra: Handless Lingo Fallen In Bhaktapur, Rituals Begin

In Bhaktapur, the final day of the eight-night, nine-day Bisket Jatra is marked by the falling of the “handless lingos” in front of the Talakwo Jatha Ganesh Temple at Pottery Square. Every year on the last day of Chaitra, locals raise the handless lingo at Talakwo in Kumaletol, Bhaktapur, and after performing rituals, the lingo is knocked down, marking the start of the procession of Bhairab’s chariot.

The Chief of the Guthi Sansthan Office in Bhaktapur, Khima Wali, shared that the lingo raised at Talakwo on Chait’s last day was knocked down today afternoon, followed by the ritual prayers for Bhairab’s chariot procession, which traditionally marks the end of the festival. The tradition has it that the lingo raised at Talakwo on Chaitra’s last day is knocked down on the 5th of Baishakh, signaling the conclusion of the festival. Afterward, prayers for Bhairab and Bhadrakali are offered, and the chariot is drawn.

Previously, there was a tradition of raising the lingo at Lhasinkhel, Vhelukhel, on Chait’s last day, with the lingo being knocked down on the 2nd of Baishakh. However, this year, as the lingo was not raised until midnight on Chaitra’s last day, the joint efforts of the Nepali Army, Armed Police, Traffic Police, and locals helped raise the lingo on the 1st of Baishakh, and it was knocked down in the evening.
