First Sighting of ‘Lesser Grey Strike’ Bird in Bhaktapur Captivates Researchers

A rare avian visitor, the ‘Lesser Grey Strike’ bird commonly found in Europe, South, and West Asia, has been sighted for the first time in the picturesque environs of Bhaktapur. The sighting occurred in the serene surroundings of Mini Koshi Tappu after the onset of Ashadh, as confirmed by ornithologist Sanjay Thashrestha during a field expedition.

Speaking to reporters in Kathmandu, Thashrestha shared that this was the first documented sighting of the ‘Lesser Grey Strike’ in Bhaktapur’s scenic landscapes. The bird was captured on camera by path exhibitor Shankar Tiwari, marking the first record for Nepal’s hilly regions alongside Kathmandu Valley.

Last year, during the final hours of Baisakh, the National Wildlife Technician, Devraj Joshi, witnessed the Lesser Grey in the eastern coastal region of the Shuklaphanta National Park. The bird, known as the Lesser Grey, has been officially confirmed for the first time in Nepal.

The Lesser Grey, which is black and black, appears to have white feathers in the middle of a long distance in the wings and dark brown in the Gauhati-like Gohthale, a semi-dry zone in Europe and the western parts of the desert, and the dry regions of Rajasthan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, according to Thashrestha.
