Limited Skies Ahead: Resunga Now Served by Only Three Weekly Flights

Resunga Airport in Gulmi has now adjusted its flight schedule, with Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) operating flights only three times a week. Previously, flights to and from Gulmi were held four times weekly, but the schedule has been revised due to operational constraints.

Revised Flight Timings

According to Suman Thapa, the station chief at Resunga Airport, NAC previously operated flights on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Following the recent adjustment, flights will now operate on Sunday, Tuesday, and Saturday only. This change is expected to affect both regular commuters and tourists who rely on the air service for faster connectivity to the capital.

Reasons Behind the Schedule Change

NAC currently operates only three Twin Otter aircraft. These aircraft require regular maintenance, which occasionally limits their availability. Thapa explained that due to the shortage of aircraft at certain times, NAC has adjusted its flight schedule temporarily from the earlier routine. Over the past three months, regular flights at Resunga Airport have been maintained except during heavy rainfall, poor weather conditions, or dense fog.

Flight Details and Fares

The Twin Otter aircraft used at Resunga Airport have a seating capacity of 18. The aircraft depart from Kathmandu at 6:30 AM and leave Resunga Airport at 7:30 AM. Fares are set at NPR 7,500 for flights from Kathmandu to Gulmi and NPR 7,300 for the return journey. Due to strong afternoon winds at the airport, flights are technically scheduled only in the morning to ensure safety and smooth operations.

Impact on Local Residents and Tourists

The introduction of air services has significantly improved connectivity for the Gulmi district. Previously, residents had to endure an 18-hour road journey to reach the capital. Now, with flights from Gulmi to Kathmandu, the journey takes just 45 minutes, making it far more convenient for locals and domestic travelers.

The availability of flights has also contributed to an increase in tourist arrivals, both domestic and international. The airport has become an important gateway for tourists exploring the natural and cultural attractions of Gulmi, reducing travel time and enhancing the overall tourism experience.

Challenges for Passengers

Despite the increased demand for air travel in the region, the limited number of flights has caused some inconvenience for passengers. Frequent changes to the flight schedule and the reduced frequency mean that residents and travelers must plan their trips carefully. The limited number of aircraft further complicates matters, as maintenance and technical checks often lead to temporary disruptions in service.

Historical Context of Resunga Airport Services

Nepal Airlines Corporation commenced commercial flight services at Resunga Airport on 29th Baisakh 2080 BS (mid-2023). Since then, the airport has played a vital role in enhancing regional connectivity and reducing travel challenges for the people of Gulmi and neighboring areas. The introduction of morning flights, in particular, has allowed passengers to travel efficiently while mitigating the technical challenges posed by afternoon winds.

Although the recent reduction in flight frequency may pose short-term challenges, it is expected to help NAC manage its limited fleet more effectively. Authorities hope that once maintenance schedules and aircraft availability are better managed, flight frequency may be increased to meet the growing demand. For now, passengers are encouraged to book flights in advance and plan their travel according to the revised schedule.
