Domestic and international flights across Nepal have been affected due to poor weather conditions, resulting in reduced visibility and minor delays at several airports, including Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), deteriorating weather since Monday morning has disrupted normal flight schedules. Operations at TIA have been partially impacted as visibility levels dropped, causing several flights to be delayed or put on hold for safety reasons.
Flight Delays and Operational Challenges
Tribhuvan International Airport General Manager Hansa Raj Pandey confirmed that although flight operations have been affected, no cancellations have been necessary so far. “The visibility remains below normal, and we are currently operating flights under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Some flights have been delayed, but the overall situation is under control,” he said. He further added that the temporary delays are primarily due to increased air traffic pressure and coordination challenges caused by the limited flight window during low-visibility conditions.
Remote Mountain Airports Also Affected
Flight services to several mountain airports, including Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport and Simikot Airport in Humla, have also been partially disrupted due to poor weather and low visibility. These areas, which rely heavily on air connectivity for passengers and supplies, are experiencing intermittent operations. Officials from local airlines confirmed that aircraft are being kept on standby until conditions improve, especially for short takeoff and landing (STOL) airstrips in mountainous regions.
Western Weather System Causes Rain and Snow
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported that the adverse weather is a result of a western disturbance and a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea. This system has been pushing moisture-laden winds into Nepal, causing rainfall and snowfall in several regions.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division stated that light to moderate rain and snow are likely in Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces, as well as scattered high-altitude areas of other provinces through Wednesday morning.
Cloudy Skies Across Kathmandu Valley
The Kathmandu Valley has experienced overcast skies since early morning, with temperatures dipping and visibility dropping across major routes. Light drizzles were reported in several areas, adding to the flight delays.
Airlines and authorities have advised passengers to stay updated on their flight schedules and remain patient as operations are being carried out under safety protocols. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has also cautioned travelers and trekkers heading toward Himalayan regions to remain alert as snowfall and rainfall may persist in higher elevations over the next two days.
