Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Welcomed by Lumbini Development Trust

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was warmly received by the Lumbini Development Trust during his visit to Lumbini. He was welcomed by the Trust’s Vice Chairman, Dr. Lharkyal Lama (Khenpo Chime), who highlighted the deep-rooted historical connection between Nepal and Sri Lanka, further strengthened by Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

In the meeting, Dr. Lama emphasized the significance of Lumbini, noting that it is not only the birthplace of Gautama Buddha but also the site where two other Buddhas, Krakuchanda and Kanakamuni, were born, making it a profoundly important location. Dr. Lama also underscored the need for regular international flights at the Gautam Buddha International Airport to enhance Lumbini’s accessibility.

Rajapaksa was accompanied by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Nepal, Sudarshana Pathirana, during the visit. Several other officials, including the Trust’s Treasurer Dhundiraj Bhattarai, Member Secretary Sanuraja Shakya, Planning Chief Smita Bhatt, and Senior Director Gyanin Rai, were present to welcome the former president.

During the event, Senior Director Gyanin Rai requested assistance for the reconstruction of the Sri Lankan Temple in Lumbini. Following the welcome ceremony, Rajapaksa toured the Mayadevi Temple, where he expressed great admiration for the sacred site.

Accompanied by his family, Rajapaksa lit a peace lamp at Lumbini, wishing for global peace. He described visiting the birthplace of Buddha as one of the greatest achievements of his life. Rajapaksa also took time to learn about the Mayadevi Temple, the birthstone marker, the statue of Mayadevi, the Pushkarini Pond, and the Ashoka Pillar, all of which are significant landmarks in Lumbini.
