Galekhamkot: A Hidden Gem in Tanahun with Untapped Tourism Potential

Galekhamkot, located 15 kilometers from Tanahun’s district headquarters, Dumre, stands at an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level in Vyas Municipality-6. This scenic spot provides breathtaking views of nearby areas including Vyas Municipality, Shuklagandaki Municipality, and Lamjung’s Central Nepal Municipality.

Despite its proximity to the district headquarters, Galekhamkot remains relatively obscure due to challenges with road accessibility. The journey to Galekhamkot involves traveling along the Prithvi Highway from Tanahun’s Vyas Municipality-5, through a combination of paved and unpaved roads. These road conditions have limited the area’s appeal to tourists. Chijamaya Shrestha, a resident involved in tourist management, underscores the road difficulties as a major obstacle to attracting more visitors.

Currently, Galekhamkot offers accommodation facilities for up to 20-25 people. Sudip Gaffar from Vyas-2 highlights the historical significance of Galekhamkot, noting that the site remains under-promoted. He calls for increased publicity and road improvements to enhance its tourism appeal. Local authorities are urged to take proactive steps to develop the region’s tourism potential.

Galekhamkot has historical roots as a former stronghold of the Magar kings, and residents are actively working to promote its cultural and tourism value. Basant Kumar Shrestha, President of the Galekhamkot Village Development Committee, acknowledges the area’s considerable religious and tourism potential, stating, “We are committed to developing this place.”

Visitors to Galekhamkot can enjoy panoramic views of various scenic spots including Dumre, Thaprek in Shuklagandaki Municipality, Kalesti, Sisaghat, Bhorte in Lammjung, Soti Pasal, Duipiple, Fewa Lake, Begnas Lake, and several other picturesque locations. The region is predominantly inhabited by the Newar community. A viewpoint tower, constructed at NPR 1.65 million, enhances the viewing experience. Additionally, the Kot Bhairav Temple in Galekhamkot, known for its special pujas during Dashain, contributes to the area’s cultural significance, as noted by resident Manita Gurung.

With its rich historical backdrop, stunning vistas, and cultural heritage, Galekhamkot has the potential to emerge as a prominent tourist destination, provided that improvements in road infrastructure and promotional efforts are made.
