Golf Festival to Boost Rural Tourism in Okhaldhunga’s Tholedemba Danda

Okhaldhunga is set to host a unique event aimed at promoting rural tourism in the region: the “Golf Festival” at Tholedemba Danda. Positioned at an altitude of 3,350 meters, Tholedemba Danda is the highest point in Okhaldhunga district, and the upcoming festival aims to leverage the area’s scenic beauty and geographical significance to foster the growth of tourism in the district. The event will attract national and international golfers, marking an exciting development in the area’s tourism landscape.

Gambhu Sherpa, the chairman of Khijidemba Rural Municipality, shared that the Golf Festival will coincide with Nepal’s New Year celebrations, taking place on the 1st and 2nd of Baishakh (April 13-14, 2025). According to Sherpa, the festival is designed to promote both local tourism and the overall development of Khijidemba, with participants expected from around the world. Players from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Bhutan, and several districts within Nepal will take part in this prestigious event.

This initiative reflects Khijidemba’s commitment to exploring tourism as a pathway to economic development. Sherpa emphasized that the municipality recognized the untapped potential of tourism, particularly in the golf sector, as a means to bring both economic benefits and international attention to the region. The municipality has developed infrastructure to support golf events, with plans to make the Golf Festival an annual fixture in the calendar. “We hope this event will not only boost local tourism but also serve as a catalyst for sustainable development in the region,” Sherpa stated.

To ensure the success of the festival, Khijidemba Rural Municipality previously conducted a feasibility study with the help of experts to assess the viability of hosting a golf competition. This was part of a larger effort to boost tourism in the area. Just a month ago, the municipality organized a three-day cultural festival celebrating ethnic identity, which also aimed to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage and attract more visitors.

The municipality’s approach to tourism development is multi-faceted, with several projects already underway. Sherpa revealed plans for creating four tourism routes, which will be integrated with the concept of trekking and golf. In addition, the municipality intends to host ultra-race marathons, cycling competitions, and rock climbing events, all of which are expected to further diversify the region’s tourist offerings. “After completing the necessary infrastructure development, we will organize adventure sports competitions and continue to promote Khijidemba as a key tourist destination,” Sherpa added.

Khijidemba’s strategic location, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lush landscapes, offers a compelling attraction for nature lovers and adventure tourists. Tholedemba Danda, in particular, has become a favorite spot for visitors seeking panoramic views of the Himalayan range and the mesmerizing beauty of various species of rhododendrons and other local flora. The area is considered one of the top 100 must-visit destinations in Nepal, making it a prime location for tourism development of Okhaldhunga.

The festival will not only showcase the region’s natural beauty but also serve as a platform for promoting sustainable tourism. Sherpa envisions the Golf Festival as the first step in a long-term strategy to develop Khijidemba into a major tourism hub. The area is uniquely positioned to offer a range of outdoor activities, from adventure sports to nature walks, trekking, and, of course, golf. Local communities stand to benefit directly from the influx of tourists, as the event is expected to create jobs and stimulate the local economy of Okhaldhunga.

The festival’s international scope is another important aspect, as it will expose Khijidemba to a global audience. The participation of foreign athletes and tourists will not only elevate the event but also help forge valuable international connections for future collaborations in the tourism sector. The influx of foreign visitors is also expected to generate interest in other tourism-related ventures, such as hospitality services and guided tours of the area’s attractions.

In addition to its tourism appeal, Khijidemba is strategically situated as a gateway to other nearby attractions, including Dudh Kunda and several other sacred and natural sites. The municipality has plans to expand its offerings to cater to a variety of tourists, from those seeking adventure to those interested in cultural and spiritual tourism.

The Golf Festival is expected to put Khijidemba on the map as a destination that combines nature, sports, and culture. With an increasing focus on eco-friendly and sustainable tourism, the event will highlight how rural areas like Khijidemba can play a pivotal role in the overall growth of Nepal’s tourism industry. Sherpa’s vision includes not only attracting tourists but also fostering local pride and involvement in the tourism sector.

In the coming years, Khijidemba hopes to see more infrastructure development to support its growing tourism sector. With improvements in transportation and facilities, the area could become a prominent destination for both domestic and international travelers. Sherpa concluded, “This festival is just the beginning of a larger movement towards making Khijidemba a recognized destination for adventure and leisure tourism.”

Overall, the Tholedemba Danda Golf Festival represents a significant opportunity for Okhaldhunga’s tourism industry, blending sports, nature, and local culture. It is set to attract both visitors and investors, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s economy while fostering sustainable tourism practices.
