Gorkha Museum Attracts Over 133,000 Visitors in 2082

The Gorkha Museum recorded a total of 133,991 visitors in the year 2082 BS, reflecting a steady rise in interest among tourists and students in Nepal’s historical heritage.

Located in Gorkha, the birthplace of Nepal’s unification, the Gorkha Museum has increasingly become a key destination for those seeking to study the country’s history, particularly the legacy of the Shah dynasty and the unification campaign.

Significant Revenue Collection

According to Museum Chief Jay Narayan Karki, the institution generated a total revenue of Rs 3.045 million during the year. He noted that the growing number of visitors has contributed to increased income, which supports the maintenance and operation of the museum. “The structure of the museum, its historical content, and the stories of the Shah dynasty and Nepal’s unification continue to attract visitors from across the country and abroad,” Karki said.

Students Lead Visitor Demographics

Students made up a significant portion of the total visitors, with 44,070 students visiting the museum for educational purposes. Schools and academic institutions frequently organize study tours to the site, making it an important learning hub for history and culture. In addition, 87,219 general visitors toured the museum, highlighting its popularity among the wider public.

International Visitors Also on the Rise

The museum also welcomed a growing number of international tourists. According to Karki, 160 visitors came from SAARC countries, while 2,542 visitors were from other foreign nations. Officials say the increasing international footfall reflects Nepal’s expanding cultural tourism appeal and the global interest in its historical roots.

Affordable Entry Fees and Accessibility

The museum has maintained affordable entry fees to encourage wider access. Students are charged Rs 10, while Nepali citizens pay Rs 25. Visitors from SAARC countries are charged Rs 50, and tourists from other countries pay Rs 100. To ensure convenience, the museum remains open seven days throughout the week, allowing visitors to explore its exhibits without interruption.

With visitor numbers steadily increasing each year, the Gorkha Museum is playing a crucial role in promoting cultural tourism in Nepal. It not only preserves historical artifacts but also serves as an educational platform for understanding the origins of modern Nepal.
