The government is advancing plans to open an additional 57 peaks, each standing above 5,800 meters, for mountaineering.
According to the Department of Tourism, the process to open these peaks for the upcoming season is already underway. The peaks, ranging from Eastern Taplejung to Western Humla, have been recommended to the government for approval.
Director Rakesh Gurung of the Department of Tourism stated that these 57 peaks have been proposed for climbing to further develop Nepal’s mountain tourism and promote adventure tourism. Among these, 46 peaks border China, two are on the border with India, and nine are located within Nepal’s borders.
The peaks set to be opened range in height from 5,807 meters to 6,868 meters.
Despite the government having already opened 401 peaks for climbing, not all of them have been successfully summited. This new initiative is part of ongoing efforts to boost tourism and adventure activities in the country.
