Government Urged to Act Swiftly After Devastating Flood in Solukhumbu’s Thame Village

The government’s attention has been drawn to a significant disaster in Thame, located in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 of Solukhumbu district, following a devastating flood. The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on August 16, resulting in substantial losses.

During a session of the National Assembly today, lawmaker Krishna Bahadur Rokaya raised concerns over the extensive damage caused by the flood, which was triggered by an outburst from the Khumbu Glacier Lake. Rokaya reported that the flood had swept away 20 houses, a medical clinic, and a school building. Additionally, one person has been reported missing, and many more houses have been inundated. He called on the government to intensify search and rescue operations and to investigate the reports surrounding the incident. Rokaya stressed the importance of the government being sensitive to the potential risks posed by the Khumbu Glacier Lake.

In the same session, lawmaker Rukmini Koirala highlighted the gravity of the situation in Solukhumbu, which lies within the Koshi Province. She noted that the flood also impacted the Dudhkoshi River and called for official details and data to be provided. Koirala emphasized the need for an official statement, asserting that the disaster was likely a result of climate change.

Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami also addressed the government, expressing concern over the situation in Thame and stressing the heightened risk faced by mountain settlements located in geographically volatile zones, especially during continuous monsoon rains. Achhami advised the government to implement a rehabilitation plan for citizens living in vulnerable areas.

Earlier in the session, other members, including Jayanti Devi Rai, also underscored the urgency of relocating the residents of Thame to safer areas to prevent further tragedies. The government is being urged to act swiftly to mitigate the impact of this disaster and to ensure the safety of the affected communities.
