Once a quiet trekking route, the Annapurna Base Camp in Myagdi is now bustling with over 300 domestic tourists daily, leading to an urgent need for improved facilities and infrastructure. Located in Annapurna Rural Municipality-4, Narchyang, the First Annapurna Base Camp has recently become a popular destination, attracting a surge of local trekkers eager to experience the beauty of the Annapurna range up close.
Tourism campaigner Tej Gurung describes the transformation as remarkable: “Three years ago, this trail was almost deserted. Now, visitors flock here daily, overwhelming the existing infrastructure, which is not sufficient to accommodate the influx.” Locals in Narchyang are thrilled by the rising number of tourists, though the scarcity of amenities poses challenges, especially for trekkers without tents.
Hotel owners and tourism entrepreneurs suggest that with additional lodging and food facilities, Annapurna Base Camp could become the primary tourist attraction in Myagdi. Chhabi Acharya, a recent visitor from Beni, emphasized the uniqueness of the site, stating, “Annapurna Base Camp is Myagdi’s prime destination. For domestic travelers wanting to experience the mountains up close, it stands out as one of Nepal’s top spots.”
The Annapurna I Mountain stands at a majestic 8,091 meters and serves as a base for climbers. The route features scenic highlights, including Panchakunda Lake, waterfalls, caves, and the popular Fhutphute Lake. Starting at Humkhola in Narchyang, the trail is also known as the Maurice Herzog Route, leading trekkers through the stunning landscapes of glaciers and waterfalls. This two-day trek from Beni has become increasingly popular among those seeking a short yet immersive trekking experience.
According to Dhaulagiri Tourism Council Chair Amar Baniya, the number of tourists visiting Annapurna Base Camp has increased sixfold this year. In response to the rising demand, Annapurna Rural Municipality is preparing a budget to enhance the area’s infrastructure. Plans are underway to construct well-equipped hotels, lodges, communication facilities, and tea houses along the route, making the base camp a more accessible and comfortable destination.
With improved infrastructure, Annapurna Base Camp could welcome thousands of visitors yearly, enriching the local tourism industry and enhancing Myagdi’s reputation as a premier trekking destination. Known as the “Elderly Mountain” of Nepal, Annapurna I and its scenic base camp continue to captivate trekkers, solidifying their place among Nepal’s most cherished natural attractions.
