Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail: A New Tourist Attraction in Gandaki Province

The Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association in Gandaki Province has recently introduced the Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail, unveiling a series of trekking itineraries spanning from four to eleven days and encompassing 13 distinct destinations.

Supported by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forests, and Environment of Gandaki Province, the association has launched promotional brochures detailing these diverse itineraries. Founder President Bobarjung Gurung emphasized the initiative’s primary goal of safeguarding ancient Gurung settlements and culture, particularly amidst growing concerns over unregulated road construction threatening traditional trekking paths.

Key highlights of the trail include Tangting, Karapudanda, Tapro, Kholasothar, Thulo Lek, Thurju, Dudh Pokhari, Gurung Deurali, Danphe Kharka, and Timang, culminating in Besisahar. These brochures, developed with ministry support, cater to both domestic and international tourists, offering flexible options to accommodate various preferences and schedules.

In collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board, the Ministry of Tourism, and local municipalities, the association conducted a comprehensive ten-day exploration and promotion program from June 4 to June 13, 2024. This initiative aimed to map the trail and gather essential data for advancing trekking tourism in the region.

Secretary General Tul Gurung underscored the trail’s cultural significance, highlighting its historical role in the ancient salt trade route to Tibet. The trail seeks to revive and promote this rich cultural heritage, connecting modern tourists with the enduring traditions of the Gurung community.

Plans include the development of camping sites in the upper regions of the trail and the establishment of community homestays in lower villages like Pasgaun, Bhachok, Yangjakot, Tangting, and Sikles. Ongoing mapping efforts are slated for completion within the current fiscal year.

This new trekking initiative not only promises a unique cultural journey but also aims to invigorate local tourism and preserve the cherished heritage of the Gurung community.
