Several parts of Nepal are receiving rainfall, with authorities warning of a possible rise in water levels in rivers and streams and a heightened risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas. The latest weather alert covers a large number of districts, while Nuwakot and Rasuwa have been identified as areas of particular concern, where the flow of small rivers and streams could increase significantly if rainfall intensifies.
Rainfall Expected Across Several Districts
Rainfall and weather-related risks have been forecast in Panchthar, Tehrathum, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Dhading, Makwanpur, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Syangja, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Baglung, Gulmi, Bardiya and Kailali.
Weather conditions are expected to remain generally cloudy in many areas, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall possible at several locations. Isolated areas could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The warning comes alongside rainfall currently affecting Sudurpashchim Province, including Dhangadhi and other areas. The Water and Meteorology Office in Attariya has forecast rainfall across much of the province over the next two to three days, with one or two locations potentially receiving very heavy rain.
Nuwakot and Rasuwa Face Flash-Flood Concern
Authorities have warned that small rivers and streams flowing through Nuwakot and Rasuwa could swell rapidly, particularly if intense rainfall occurs. Such conditions could trigger flash floods with little warning, posing a threat to settlements, roads, bridges and travellers near waterways.
The risk is also significant in hilly and mountainous areas where steep terrain can cause rainwater to accumulate and move downstream rapidly. People living near riverbanks and streams are therefore advised to closely monitor local conditions and remain prepared to move to safer locations if water levels begin rising.
In Sudurpashchim, the Armed Police Force Nepal No. 7 Baidyanath Brigade has similarly urged residents in flood-prone and riverbank areas of Kailali and Kanchanpur to remain vigilant. Security units have been placed on standby for possible disaster-response operations.
Travellers and Riverside Communities Urged to Take Precautions
Travellers, tourists, trekkers and people planning road journeys are advised to exercise extra caution during periods of heavy rainfall. Unnecessary travel through areas experiencing heavy rain should be avoided where possible. People should stay away from riverbanks, riverbeds, stream crossings, bridges and low-lying areas during heavy rain. Travellers should never attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, as water levels and currents can change within minutes.
Those travelling through hilly and mountainous districts should also remain alert to landslides, road blockages, falling debris and sudden flooding. Residents living close to rivers and streams are advised to keep essential belongings and emergency supplies ready and to follow warnings issued by local authorities, security agencies and weather officials. Authorities are urging the public to remain alert and prioritize safety as rainfall continues, particularly in areas where small rivers and streams can rise rapidly.
