The Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has announced that the monsoon system is currently active throughout Nepal, affecting weather patterns across all provinces. According to the latest updates, the monsoon low-pressure trough is situated close to its average position in eastern Nepal, while it has shifted northward from its average position in the western region of the country. This positioning is influencing widespread cloud formation and precipitation activity across the country.

Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Select Areas

Today, there is a forecast of heavy rainfall at one or two locations in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces. The MFD has urged residents of these regions to remain alert, particularly those living in flood-prone and landslide-sensitive areas. The forecast indicates an increased risk of water-induced disasters due to the intensity of rainfall expected in short durations.

Widespread Cloudy Conditions and Moderate Rain Likely

In general, the weather is expected to remain partly to mostly cloudy throughout the day across the nation. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is predicted to occur at several places in Bagmati, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Meanwhile, a few areas in the remaining provinces are also likely to experience rainfall. The cloudy skies and frequent showers are typical signs of an active monsoon pattern, which may persist for the next few days.

Mountain Regions May Experience Snowfall

Apart from rainfall in the lower and mid-hill regions, the MFD has also highlighted the possibility of light to moderate snowfall in some parts of the high hilly and mountainous regions of the country. This includes areas in the upper elevations of provinces such as Karnali and Sudurpaschim, which commonly experience occasional summer snowfall during the peak monsoon period.

Night Forecast: Rain to Continue in Central and Eastern Regions

The night forecast remains consistent with ongoing monsoon activity. The MFD projects that tonight, most parts of the country will witness partly to generally cloudy conditions. Light to moderate rainfall with chances of thunder and lightning is likely in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Furthermore, there is a continued possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations within Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces during the evening and night hours.

Preparedness Measures Recommended

Considering the monsoon’s active status, the Meteorological Division has advised local authorities, disaster management units, and the general public to take necessary precautions. With flash floods, river swelling, and landslides being common hazards during this period, timely warnings and readiness can help minimize potential damages. Farmers have also been advised to secure their crops and livestock, while travelers should check weather updates before making travel plans, especially in hilly and mountainous regions.

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure

As the monsoon intensifies, daily life in several areas could be disrupted due to potential road blockages, reduced visibility, and transportation delays. Past experiences indicate that areas with poor drainage systems in urban centers like Kathmandu, Biratnagar, and Janakpur may face waterlogging, while rural regions may experience temporary isolation due to swollen rivers and landslides.

Call for Vigilance and Cooperation

The government, in collaboration with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, continues to monitor the monsoon developments closely. Citizens are encouraged to follow official weather bulletins, remain vigilant during heavy rains, and report any early signs of natural hazards to local disaster response teams. Media outlets have also been requested to disseminate timely and accurate weather updates to raise public awareness.

With the monsoon fully active over Nepal, the country is set to experience significant rainfall, cloudy skies, and varying weather phenomena across regions. While this season is crucial for agriculture, it also demands heightened awareness and preparedness to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Authorities have issued necessary alerts and continue to monitor conditions to ensure public safety and resilience during this critical period.
