Historic ‘Dhan Naach’ Monument to be Constructed in Taplejung to Preserve Limbu Cultural Heritage

A monument named “Takwachang Takma Yaragma Ten” dedicated to the historic Dhan Naach of the Limbu community is set to be constructed at Tokmedanda in Fungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung. The initiative for the monument comes from the Kirat Yakthung Chumlung organization.

Dhan Naach is a traditional cultural dance of the Limbu community, historically playing a crucial role in uniting young men and women while showcasing cultural solidarity. However, with the influence of modernization and changing times, the practice of Dhan Naach has been gradually fading. Indira Menyangbo, the president of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung Taplejung, shared that the construction of the Dhan Naach monument is expected to cost approximately NPR 5 million. The construction work is planned to commence during the Lakhay Jatra festival.

“The monument will be constructed on the walls of Tokmedanda, with a backdrop featuring the scenic views of Kanchenjunga and Kumbhakarna mountains,” Menyangbo stated. The monument will feature sculptures of two men and two women performing the Dhan Naach, each standing 6 feet tall, symbolizing the traditional essence of the dance. A local craftsman has been contracted for NPR 3.2 million to create the monument, according to Menyangbo. The area around the monument will be enhanced with steps and additional structures to make the site more attractive.

According to Dambar Palungwa, the vice president of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung, the construction of the monument will not only help preserve the cultural heritage of the Limbu community but also promote tourism in the region. “We aim to complete the monument within four months,” he added. Previously, a Chyabrung monument, reflecting Limbu culture, was constructed outside the Pathibhara Temple. Dhan Naach is an important cultural practice for the Limbu community, especially performed during wedding ceremonies.
