Historic Family Ascent on Mount Makalu Celebrated by 8K Expeditions

8K Expeditions has extended warm congratulations to a remarkable team of climbers who successfully reached the summit of Mount Makalu (8,485 meters), the world’s fifth-highest peak, at 8:00 AM Nepal Time on May 9, 2025. The ascent marks a significant achievement in Himalayan mountaineering, celebrating family unity, international collaboration, and enduring human determination.

A highlight of the expedition was the historic summit by five Sherpa siblings from Sankhuwasabha Ang Dawa Sherpa, Muktu Lakpa Sherpa, Ngima Dorchi Sherpa, Pechhumbe Sherpa, and Pasang Yangi Sherpa. Their collective ascent stands as a powerful symbol of strength, resilience, and the rich cultural legacy of the Sherpa community. Climbing one of the world’s most challenging mountains together as a family is a rare and inspiring feat.

“This is more than a summit it’s a story of tradition, unity, and perseverance,” said an 8K Expeditions official. “The Sherpa siblings have set an example of harmony and excellence that truly reflects the Himalayan spirit.”

Adding to the occasion, Ms. Anima Sherpa daughter of Muktu Lakpa Sherpa also reached the summit, making the climb a proud multi-generational milestone. Her involvement underscores the growing role of youth and women in Nepal’s mountaineering future.

The expedition also featured international climbers Ms. Iryana Karagan from Ukraine and Mr. Patrick Francois J. Mendriks from Belgium, highlighting the spirit of global cooperation that defines modern Himalayan expeditions. Their participation alongside the Sherpa team showcased the months of shared preparation, trust, and teamwork required for success.

8K Expeditions praised the entire team for their discipline, commitment, and courage. “Climbing Makalu demands not just physical endurance but deep mental strength and mutual trust. This team embodied all of that,” the company stated.

Mount Makalu, located in the Mahalangur Himalayas southeast of Everest, is known for its steep faces and razor-edged ridges, making it one of the most technically demanding 8,000-meter peaks. The team’s achievement under such conditions is a significant milestone in Himalayan climbing history.

As the climbers descend, 8K Expeditions has emphasized that true success includes a safe return. The company hopes the expedition will inspire future generations both in Nepal and around the world to pursue dreams in the high Himalayas.

The summit also serves as a tribute to the invaluable contributions of Sherpa climbers. With the inclusion of next-generation mountaineer Anima Sherpa, the climb further cements the Sherpa legacy not only as guides, but as legends of the mountains.
