The historic Indrayani Dyochhen (Deity House) at Khauma in Bhaktapur has been successfully reconstructed, marking a significant step in preserving the city’s religious heritage and strengthening its appeal as a cultural tourism destination. The historic deity house, located in Bhaktapur Municipality-2, was formally inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Nepal Workers and Peasants Party Chairman Narayan Man Bijukchhe.
NPR 37.6 Million Invested in Reconstruction
According to Binod Charan Raya, chairperson of the reconstruction consumer committee, the restoration of Indrayani Dyochhen was completed at a total cost of approximately NPR 37.6 million. Of the total investment, NPR 27.6 million was provided by Bhaktapur Municipality, while NPR 6.394 million was raised through donations. The project also received approximately NPR 1.7 million worth of material and other in-kind support. Thousands of residents contributed their labour, playing an important role in completing the reconstruction. The combination of public funding, community contributions and local participation highlights the importance of collective efforts in preserving Bhaktapur’s historic and religious landmarks.

Dedicated Fund for Long-Term Maintenance
A separate NPR 2 million endowment fund has also been established to support the regular maintenance of Indrayani Dyochhen. According to Krishna Shwori Hada, secretary of the reconstruction consumer committee, the fund was created with the objective of carrying out maintenance work at least once every year. Additional contributions are being collected to increase the size of the fund and ensure that the historic structure receives regular care in the future. Such a maintenance mechanism is particularly important for heritage tourism, as continuous conservation helps protect historic monuments while ensuring that they remain attractive and accessible to visitors.
Preserving Bhaktapur’s Cultural Heritage
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Narayan Man Bijukchhe stressed the importance of transparency and integrity in the use of public resources. He urged elected representatives and public officials to work honestly and ensure that public funds are used properly without any misuse. Other officials attending the event also highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Indrayani Dyochhen and the need to preserve Bhaktapur’s traditional heritage.

Among those present were Bhaktapur Municipality Mayor Sunil Prajapati, Bagmati Province Assembly members Surendra Raj Gosai and Srijana Saiju, Culture Division Chief at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Saubhagya Pradhananga, Deputy Mayor Rajani Joshi and Bhaktapur Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka.
A New Asset for Bhaktapur Heritage Tourism
The completion of the reconstruction adds another important heritage site to Bhaktapur’s tourism landscape. Bhaktapur is renowned for its historic temples, traditional architecture, courtyards, festivals and living Newar culture. The preservation of sites such as Indrayani Dyochhen helps maintain the cultural character that attracts visitors to the historic city. For tourists interested in heritage, architecture, religion and traditional Newar culture, restored monuments can provide deeper insight into Bhaktapur’s history and living traditions. The reconstruction can therefore contribute not only to religious and cultural preservation but also to the diversification of Bhaktapur’s heritage tourism attractions.

Community Participation at the Heart of Conservation
The involvement of thousands of local residents in the reconstruction demonstrates strong community ownership of the heritage site. Local participation is particularly valuable in cultural heritage conservation because monuments such as Indrayani Dyochhen are not simply physical structures. They are connected with religious practices, local traditions, festivals and the everyday cultural life of the community. Maintaining this connection can help ensure that heritage tourism develops in a way that respects local identity and traditions.
Sustainable Conservation Could Strengthen Tourism
The establishment of a dedicated maintenance fund alongside the completion of reconstruction provides a foundation for the long-term preservation of the site. As tourism in Bhaktapur continues to benefit from its historic architecture and cultural attractions, properly maintained heritage sites can help create a richer experience for visitors. With its reconstruction completed, continued conservation and effective promotion could establish Indrayani Dyochhen as another significant cultural attraction in Bhaktapur, while supporting the broader preservation of Nepal’s living heritage.
