Human Remains Found at Mardi Himal Base Camp Confirmed to be of Missing 22-Year-Old

Human remains were discovered at Mardi Himal Base Camp in Kaski District on Friday. The remains have been confirmed to belong to 22-year-old Michael Liu, who had been missing since Poush 14 (December 29) last year.

According to Police Superintendent Mohan Kumar Thapa of Kaski, the remains were identified through clothing brands and a mobile phone found at the site, which matched Liu’s belongings. “The family in Sweden confirmed the identity based on the clothing and mobile phone,” Thapa stated. A police team has been dispatched to the area to investigate further.

The remains were found on the ridge of the base camp, including bones, an iPhone, and some clothing. The team, led by Inspector Bodhraj Regmi of the Bagark Police Station, had to trek for three hours to reach the site due to the lack of available helicopters. “Currently, helicopters are not available, so it will take about two days for the team to arrive,” Thapa added.

Following a discussion on Sunday, the Machhapuchchhre Rural Municipality has sent local herder Govinda Gautam and hotelier Chiman Narayan Gautam back to the site. They had previously sent photos and videos of the remains. Hari Bahadur Chhetri, Chair of Ward 9 of Machhapuchchhre Rural Municipality, confirmed the decision to send Gautam and Narayan again for further information.

Michael Liu had departed from Mardi High Camp at around 4 a.m. on Poush 14 but failed to return to the hotel that evening, prompting a search for him.
