Global hospitality giant IHG Hotels & Resorts (InterContinental Hotels Group) is set to make a grand return to Nepal, expanding its footprint beyond Kathmandu for the first time with the launch of its premium brand ‘Crowne Plaza Lumbini.’
Return of the Crowne Plaza Brand to Nepal
IHG’s Crowne Plaza brand was previously associated with The Soaltee Kathmandu, one of Nepal’s oldest five-star hotels. The partnership, however, ended on May 14, 2021. Now, after a hiatus of over three years, the brand is making its comeback through Lumbini Heritage Limited, bringing international hospitality standards back to Nepal. The existing Lumbini Heritage Hotel, currently in operation near the birthplace of Lord Buddha, will undergo complete rebranding and transformation into ‘Crowne Plaza Lumbini.’

Strategic Partnership for Tourism Growth
The agreement between IHG Hotels & Resorts and Lumbini Heritage Limited was officially signed in New Delhi, India. The signing ceremony was attended by Subash Amatya, Chairman of Lumbini Heritage Limited, and Sudeep Jain, Managing Director of South West Asia for IHG Hotels & Resorts.
The collaboration is expected to boost tourism, create local employment, and attract international investment in the Lumbini region, one of the most significant religious and cultural heritage sites in South Asia.
Premium Facilities and Modern Redesign
Previously known as ‘Pawan Palace Lumbini,’ the hotel has been acquired and upgraded to meet IHG’s global standards. The 147-room property includes seven suite rooms, a multi-purpose banquet hall, restaurants, a fitness center, swimming pool, and a range of premium amenities tailored for both domestic and international guests.
According to the company, a casino service will also be introduced within this year, further enhancing Lumbini’s tourism and leisure offerings. Located just 1.9 kilometers from the Maya Devi Temple (the birthplace of Buddha) and 9 kilometers from Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, the hotel is strategically positioned to cater to both pilgrims and international travelers.
Commitment to Local Development
Chairman Subash Amatya of Lumbini Heritage Limited expressed confidence that the collaboration with IHG would elevate the hospitality sector in Lumbini. “Our partnership with IHG will take Lumbini’s hospitality experience to a new level and bring renewed energy to the region’s tourism potential,” Amatya said.

Similarly, IHG Managing Director Sudeep Jain said, “We are delighted to strengthen our presence in Nepal once again through Crowne Plaza Lumbini. With modern design and world-class service, this property will become a preferred destination for both domestic and international guests.”
Future Expansion and IPO Plan
As part of its long-term growth strategy, Lumbini Heritage Limited has also announced plans to issue an Initial Public Offering (IPO) by 2026, inviting public participation in its expansion plans. The partnership marks a significant milestone for Nepal’s hospitality industry, reaffirming the country’s appeal as a high-potential destination for global hotel brands.
