A new high-altitude trekking destination at 5,570 metres in the Jugal Himalayan Range has been officially unveiled as a promising year-round adventure tourism site. Located in Sindhupalchok District, the newly identified viewpoint offers panoramic views of five of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and Shishapangma, from a single vantage point. The site, named Jugal Everest View Point, is being positioned as one of Nepal’s most accessible high-altitude trekking experiences, reachable within just five days from Kathmandu.

Successful Exploration and First Ascent

The viewpoint was first identified and successfully summited on Baishakh 3, 2083 BS by a four-member exploration team under the initiative of Jugal Rural Municipality. The team was led by Milan Tamang and included record-holding Everest climber Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, 15-year-old Ngima Wangchu Sherpa, and local resident Pema Sherpa.

A documentary capturing the historic ascent was screened during a formal announcement event organized at the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu on Monday, highlighting the potential of the region as an emerging trekking destination.

Easy Access with Stunning Himalayan Views

Unlike many high-altitude trekking routes that require technical climbing skills, the Jugal Everest View Point has been described as a non-technical destination suitable for general trekkers with basic physical fitness. Team leader Milan Tamang emphasized that no specialized climbing equipment is required.

“This is a point anyone can climb,” Tamang said, highlighting the accessibility of the route for both domestic and international visitors. The trekking route begins from Kathmandu, passing through Dipu in Jugal before reaching Nepemasala site of religious and natural significance, before continuing to the viewpoint. The return journey follows the same trail, with the entire round trip completed in approximately five days.

Economic and Tourism Potential for Local Communities

The destination has been strategically priced to attract a wide range of tourists, with estimated costs of around Rs 40,000 for Nepali trekkers and USD 1,000 for international visitors. Officials believe this pricing structure will help boost domestic tourism while also appealing to global adventure seekers.

Chairperson of Jugal Rural Municipality, Resham Syangbo, stated that the local government will develop necessary facilitation and support infrastructure to manage increasing visitor flow. He added that the initiative is expected to bring long-term economic benefits to the region by creating jobs and supporting local businesses. Tourism stakeholders, including Vice-Chair of NTB Kamal Sapkota, expressed optimism that the site will serve as a catalyst for economic transformation in Sindhupalchok by diversifying tourism beyond traditional routes.

Unique Position in Nepal’s Trekking Landscape

The Jugal range has gradually opened to climbers following its first successful ascent in Chaitra 2075 BS after a long period of restricted access. Since then, several peaks in the region have been progressively made accessible for exploration and trekking activities. Experts note that the new viewpoint stands out due to its proximity to Kathmandu, low cost, and exceptional Himalayan visibility, making it one of the most unique trekking offerings in Nepal’s current adventure tourism portfolio.

Record-holding climber Lakpa Dendi Sherpa highlighted that the viewpoint offers an unmatched visual experience. “From here, visitors can clearly see Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and Shishapangma along with surrounding peaks in the Jugal range,” he said.

Safety, Sustainability, and Environmental Concerns

While the announcement has been widely welcomed, stakeholders also raised concerns regarding environmental protection and sustainable development. Participants at the event warned about potential threats to the fragile ecosystem, including reports of bulldozers entering glacier areas under hydropower development activities. Tourism experts emphasized that preserving the natural integrity of the Jugal region will be critical to sustaining its long-term tourism value. Without proper environmental safeguards, the area’s appeal as a pristine Himalayan destination could be at risk.

Strong Institutional and Industry Support

The announcement event saw participation from key tourism and mountaineering stakeholders, including officials from the Nepal Tourism Board, trekking associations, and mountaineering organizations. Industry leaders highlighted both the commercial potential of the destination and the need to establish clear safety and operational guidelines before large-scale promotion.

With its combination of accessibility, affordability, and breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, the Jugal Everest View Point is being seen as a major addition to Nepal’s adventure tourism map, offering a new gateway for trekkers seeking a close and immersive Himalayan experience near the capital.
