Kami Rita Sherpa Set to Attempt 31st Everest Summit, Eyeing Another Record-Breaking Climb

Renowned Sherpa climber Kami Rita, the holder of the world record for the most ascents of Mount Everest, is preparing for his 31st summit attempt this spring season. The 55-year-old legendary mountaineer departed from Kathmandu on Sunday to lead a group of climbers to the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest, which stands at a staggering height of 8,849 meters (29,032 feet).

A native of Nepal and considered one of the greatest mountain guides in modern climbing history, Kami Rita holds the prestigious record of 30 successful ascents of Mount Everest. Remarkably, he climbed the mountain twice in May last year alone, showcasing not only physical endurance but also unparalleled determination and expertise in high-altitude mountaineering.

“I am mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared to climb the mountain,” Kami Rita said before boarding his flight from Kathmandu to the Everest region. “I am in my top physical condition right now.”

This year, the veteran climber aims to push his own limits even further and possibly set another record by attempting to summit the peak twice in one season. “My first priority is to get my client to the summit of the peak. Then I will decide on whether I will climb the peak more than one time during the season. It depends on the weather and conditions on the mountain,” he added.

A Legacy Built on Everest

Kami Rita’s legacy began in 1994, when he first stood atop Everest. Since then, he has returned nearly every year, driven by both passion and profession. Over the decades, he has cemented his name in mountaineering history as a dependable guide whose experience plays a critical role in the safety and success of expeditions.

His remarkable achievements are not just a personal feat but a representation of the pivotal role Sherpas play in Himalayan expeditions. These mountain communities provide essential support to climbers from around the world, ensuring safe passage through one of the planet’s most treacherous terrains.

His closest competitor in the record books is fellow Sherpa guide Pasang Dawa, who has made 27 successful ascents. While many aspire to break records, it is Kami Rita’s consistency, skill, and humility that make his story stand out.

Sherpa Heritage and Climbing Beyond Everest

Climbing is in Kami Rita’s blood. His father was among the first generation of Sherpa mountain guides after Everest was first successfully scaled by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Following in those pioneering footsteps, Kami Rita has not only excelled on Everest but also on several other high Himalayan peaks.

Beyond Everest, he has also summited K2, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse all of which rank among the highest mountains in the world. These accomplishments showcase his adaptability and courage in various extreme conditions, earning him international recognition.

2025 Spring Season Outlook

According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism, 214 climbers have been issued permits to climb Everest from the Nepali (southern) side this spring season, which traditionally peaks in April and May. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions, allowing climbers to attempt the summit safely.

As the spring climbing window opens, Kami Rita’s journey symbolizes more than just a personal challenge it highlights Nepal’s deep-rooted connection to the Himalayas, the unmatched skill of Sherpa climbers, and the enduring allure of the world’s tallest mountain.

Inspiration for Future Generations

Kami Rita’s journey serves as a profound source of inspiration for aspiring mountaineers and adventure lovers worldwide. His discipline, dedication, and love for the mountains have made him an icon not only in Nepal but across the global climbing community.

Each ascent carries with it stories of resilience, tradition, and courage. As he gears up for his 31st climb and possibly a 32nd the world watches in anticipation, celebrating a man who continues to redefine human limits on the roof of the world.
