Karnali’s Game-Changing Move: Chure Conservation Tied to Eco-Tourism Growth

The government of Karnali Province is working on a conservation-oriented plan for the Chure area that prioritizes environmental preservation and sustainable development. The government wants to protect the Chure range, a delicate ecological region with potential for ecotourism, as worries about its exploitation grow.

The new plan aims to protect important Chure zones in Surkhet, such as Barahatal, Chaukune, Bheriganga, and Gurbhakot. These areas will be covered in the conservation plans for the upcoming year, according to the Surkhet Land and Watershed Office.

The office’s head, Shikhar Chapai, emphasized the importance of giving water source protection top priority in both the northern Mahabharat and southern Chure regions. He underlined that environmental harm in the Chure has already resulted in issues like flooding, river erosion, and water scarcity during dry seasons, affecting springs, wells, and taps that may have an effect on the infrastructure and experience of tourists.

Sustainable tourism depends on the region’s natural beauty and ecological balance, both of which are threatened by the illicit extraction and transportation of river-based materials like sand, gravel, and stones.

Additionally, according to Chapai, Karnali has 57 watershed areas 27 in the upper region and 30 in the lower region. Five of these are regarded as extremely sensitive. In order to prevent natural disasters, certain locations, including Tallo Sanibheri (Rukum), Gumre Khola (Jajarkot), Ramaghat (Dailekh), Baluwasagri (Salyan), and Nikas Khola (Surkhet), are being given priority for protective embankment work.

The government is also building recharge ponds in different locations throughout Karnali to help with water conservation and ecosystem health, which are essential for ecotourism. As part of a coordinated conservation effort, the Land and Watershed Office, located in Surkhet, is in charge of five districts, while the Jumla office is in charge of five more.
